Finance committee chairman says: Budget 'freeze' not possible for this year It is not possible for Scugog Township to "freeze" its 1991 budget at last year's level, says the chairman of the council's fi- nance committee. Regional councillor Yvonne Christie made the comment Monday afternoon while re- sponding to a written request from the Citizens Against Un- justified Taxes (CAUT) asking that council adopt a budget freeze this year. "That request (from CAUT) ~is a perfectly normal one, but not possible" (to meet) said councillor Christie. However, she was optimis- ¥ Spring and summer fashions will be on parade March 21 at Port Perry High School. The final mill rate, she sug- gested will depend on the out- come of current labour negotia- tions between the Township and its employees. "That this budget is going to be tight-fisted is the under- statement of the year," she told the council meeting. What prompted her com- ments Monday afternoon was a letter from CAUT chairman Da- vid Frew, stating that CAUT "believes in this time of reces- sion and high unemployment that council should freeze their budget at the 1990 level." CAUT has also made the same request to the Regional council as well. Councillor Christie said outside the chambers that the local rate of assessment growth last year appears to be higher than original projections. ® Special courses Uxbridge Palliative Servic- es is looking for volunteers from the Port Perry area. : The volunteers will be trained to provide "comfort, re- lief, and support to terminally ill patients in their homes" says co-ordinator Betty Bignell. The volunteers will get complete training in a course that begins March 18 and con- tinues through to May 27, each Monday evening at Uxbridge Hospital. Some of the topics covered by this course include facing death, listening skills, physical needs, pain management, deal- ing with grief. For more information, con- tact Ms. Bignell at 852-4461 in Uxbridge. PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 12, 1991 -- 5 She said itis around 2.2 per cent, rather than original pro- jections of under two per cent. This growth in assessment will generate some $375,000 in additional tax dollars, which will help when council gets around to setting a mill rate. Meanwhile, Durham Re- gion is struggling with enor- mous financil woes, brought on mainly by large welfare costs. Regional chairman Gary Herrema has predicted that without assistance from higher levels of government, the re- gional tax bite this year could escalate to 20 per cent or more. No GST on this one Most health care facilities, schools and business across Durham Region are now fully "smoke-free," a dismaying pro- spect for employees who still smoke. In some instances, the decision to become an ex-smoker is no longer just a matter of per- sonal choice. However, the actual process of giving up cigarettes is viewed with reluctance and con- siderable anxiety. With this in mind, the Lung Association of Durham Region will offer its popular and suc- cessful Stop Smoking Program "Countdown" in Port Perry, at the Port Perry United Church, 294 Queen Street beginning Monday, March 25 at 7 p.m. For more detailed information, call the Lung Association at 436-1046.
