Letters io the editor Writer responds to issues To the Editor: I must admit I am inpressed with the success rate of the Snowmobile Club and the ap- pointed wardens in enforcing the snowmobile ban in certain restricted areas. I must say this is the best year in the past four, and I sincerely hope that this en- forcement continues to be done in the years to come. There is of course, one in particular in- dividual who thumbs his nose at everyone who tries to stop him from using the Hwy. 7A walkway from Apple Valley as his personal race track for going home. This idiot has insisted on roaring through the walkway around mid- night on snowy evenings thereby awakening everyone in the area. Oh well, Marilyn Pearce tells me that the barrier that was suppos- ed to be erected last year, will be erected for sure this year, thus stopping the snowmobiles and cars that seem to like this short- cut. The sidewalk is also to be completed. It's about time! So Durham Region is talking about increasing property taxes by about 20 to 30 per cent this years, plus even putting a toll on the proposed new Hwy. 407 going through Durham. Well I think that now is as good a time as any for Scugog Township to secede from the union of Durham Region. It was a bad idea to begin with and a lot of people in the Township would probably like to know just what are the advantages of stay- ing in Durham. Higher property taxes, water rates, etc. are just eating away too much of our disposable income. We should also get rid of market value Buying system To the Editor: I live on Scugog Island and am thrilled that we will soon have ac- cess to the 911 emergency number. if they have any information Spred Satin Spred Satin Latex Spred Latex It does mean that rural about the legality of a govern- Primer Sealer Wall Paint Semi-Gloss residents will now have to install ment forcing select members of 3.785 LITRES 3.785 LITRES 3.785 LITRES house numbers, but this will make things easier for visitors as well as emergency Crews. assessment. You can bet that when the next reassessment year comes, they won't pick a low year like 1981 or 1982, oh no, they'll pick 1989 and then see what you'll be paying in property taxes. At least double what your're paying now! Oh well, maybe we should sell and move just north to Victoria Coun- ty where the taxes are about a third of what they are here, for nearly the exact services that you have in Durham. Well Peter, you certainly were lucky your gas barbecue didn't blow a hole in the side of your house! I wonder how many peo- ple know that it is against the law to keep their propane tank in their garage, and that if it does blow up their insurance company won't pay the damages because it wasn't to be in their garage in the first place! How many of you check the hose from the tank for any cracks? You should, especial- ly as they get older and replace the hose. How many of you have a fire extinguisher handy? The ice rink on the lake was an excellent idea. Let's hope the weather is more helpful next year for this endeavour. A Durham Region police officer reported to the paper that there are numerous snowmobiles in the lake right now, spewing their pollution into the waters. Why have they not been removed and the owners billed the cost for their removal? Where are the en- vironmentalists when you really need them? Yours truly, N.I. Thompson, Port Perry for 911 signs numbers. Apparently, as an Island resident, I must purchase them from the township office. I would like to ask your readers its constituents to purchase items only from them.
