THURSDAY MORNINGS - 10:00 A.M. 110 Lilla St. - Port Perry - 985-0205 Local talent in Oshawa-based Durham Shoestring Per- formers will present the intense drama "Extremities" in April. For director Chris Rollo of Port Perry and actor Steve Foote who has the lead role of Raul, this drama presents their toughest stage challenge yet. "We are all taking a huge emotional risk. It is very chal- lenging, and it will be challeng- ing for the audiences to sit through," explained Ms. Rollo. But she stressed that in se- lecting this play, she is "not on any kind of a personal crusade." The play, written by Wil- liam Mastrosimone examines the impact of an attempted rape on the intended victim and her two room-mates. Susan Lowery plays Marjo- rie, the intended victim; Hallie Vogel and Joanne Stiensta play her room mates; and Steve Foote has the role of Raul. Of this character, Steve said "he's a real psycho." And Steve, who has han- dled several dramatic roles with the Borelians in Port Perry, said this one is a "major challenge for me." Director Rollo said when the drama has been staged in other cities, some members of the audience walked out, and in one instance climbed on stage and begged the actors to stop the performance. She expects audience reac- tion in Oshawa will be intense, but says in no way will the pro- duction be tacky. There are four performanc- es (April 5,6,12, and 13) at the Starting next month, up to 30 specially selected people will start a unique training program, offered by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, which will help them find jobs in the agriculture and food industry. "In the past few years, it has been difficult for both govern- ment and the private sector in On- tario to find qualified people to work in the agriculture and food sector,"" said Minister of Agriculture and Food Elmer Buchanan. "At the same time, some new Canadians with agricultural education or experience in their native country haven't been able to get work right away because of their lack of knowledge of Ontario agriculture. This program will improve their chances of employ- ment,' he said. The program will have two phases. In the education phase, the students will spend four to six weeks in the classroom at the Ridgetown College of Agricultural Technology. The second phase involves practical training. Following their classroom sessions, par- ticipants will be twinned with peo- ple in the ministry's field bran- ches or research stations. They will help staff with their duties, accompany them on field con- sultation and attend industry in- formation meetings. It is expected that training placements will be made with private sector companies and farmers, depending on a partici- pant's specific requirements. "This way, we provide people with the theoretical background on subjects like crop and livestock production and, agricultural economics, then showing them , theatre performance Extremi ties Director Chris Rollo and lead actor Steve Foote say dra- ma "Extremities" will challenge them and audiences.
