I = II I Er Te x bey RT ' a TR -- 28 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 19, 1991 Jennifer Berry of Port Perry and Timothy Fowler of Lakefield skated to an 8th place finish in all-Ontario prelimi- nary dance competitions held over the weekend in Bowman- ville. The 11-year olds had earlier won silver medals at the Eastern Ont. finals in Belleville. In Saturday's finals, two of the five judges placed them in third spot. They have been skating together for six months and will be partners again next season. They are coached by Brian Evans of Lindsay who was thrilled with their showing in the Ontario finals. Lose final to London 7-1 Before travelling to Barrie to participate in Barrie's annual ringette tournament the Ivory Forest Juniors went up against the girls from Pickering at the Don Beer Arena last Wednesday night. Port Perry battled their way to a 3-3 tie. One disallowed goal and a rash of penalties in the second period served to make the girls more determined to win. They continued to push Pickering throughout the game. Tracy Pelow played an excellent game between the pipes, coming up with some key saves. During the game Tracy was very ably assisted by Michelle Fitzpatrick, Shannon Fox, Jennifer Morden and Megan Marlowe who were kept on their toes by Pickering's offense. Port's three goals were scored by Val Payne, Kim Pop- pleton and Denna Lovering with assists going to Karen Kett, Den- na Lovering, Dawn Doucette, Lyndsay Dutkewich, Val Payne and Shannon Fox. In the first game of the Barrie tournament Port Perry provided the opposition for the team from North Bay. The first period end- ed with Port down by a 4-1 score. Val Payne, assisted by Dawn Doucette and Megan Marlowe, found the net with .59 remaining in the period. Although Port rallied and went on to score four goals in the second period, North Bay scored three additional goals to lead 7-5 when the final buzzer sounded. Denna Lovering, with three goals, and Karen Kett rounded out the scoring for Port Perry with assists being awarded to Dawn Doucette (3), Megan Marlowe, Jennifer Josephson, Lyndsay Dutkewich and Kim Poppleton. Port then went on to play Bar- rie. The Port Juniors seemed to have trouble getting their timing just right and as a result only managed to score two goals to Barrie's six. Kim Poppleton and Jennifer Josephson were respon- sible for Port's goals. Karen Kett assisted on both goals with an ANNOUNCEMENT PARTS DEPARTMENT will now be open SATURDAY'S ~ 8:00 AM until NOON Give Gord Mahaffy a call - Direct Parts line 985-9273 The expert choice. Game three saw Port Perry pit- ted against Niagara Falls. During this game Port managed to con- trol their share of the game. As a result of some nice passing plays the girls emerged the winners by a score of 7-4. Val Payne scored three of the seven markers, followed by Denna Lovering with two. Karen Kett and Dawn Doucette netted one each. This was a very productive game for the forward line consisting of Dawn Doucette, Val Payne and Denna Lovering who were responsible for six of Port's seven goals. Game four turned out to be a nail biter'. Sudbury and Port Perry faced off against each other to determine which team would move on to compete for the bronze medal. At one point Sudbury led by a 5-2 score but as the second period got underway Port proved that they could not be counted out. During the second period Port added five more goals to those scored in the first period by Den- na Lovering and Kim Poppleton (assists were awarded to Lynd- say Dutkewich, Michelle Fitz- patrick and Megan Marlowe). Juniors lose battle for the bronze The forward lines went to work scoring goals and the defence con- sisting of Megan Marlowe, Michelle Fitzpatrick, Jennifer Morden and Shannon Fox worked hard with Tracy Pelow to make sure Sudbury did not score any additional goals. Goals in the se- cond period were scored on beautifully placed shots by Lynd- say Dutkewich (assists by Karen Kett and Jennifer Josephson), Dawn Doucette (assists by Kim Poppleton and Jennifer Josephson), Karen Kett with 2 (assists by Lyndsay Dutkewich and Kim Poppleton) and Dawn Doucette (unassisted). The girls were now set to battle for the bronze. However, the final game of the week-end proved to be a disap- pointment for the girls. The Lon- don team found our net seven times while Port Perry could on- ly manage one marker scored by Kim Poppleton on passes from Lyndsay Dutkewich and Karen Kett. The Ivory Forst Juniors would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Port Perry Petites who brought home the Gold medal. Port Perry IGA Petites When these two fine teams meet things have a way of hap- pening and happening quickly. This game was no exception because with 58 seconds gone in the first period Natasha Burgess banked a nice pass off the glass to Jennifer Donneley who in turn hit Amanda Wakeford in the slot and with a low bullet beat the Warkworth goalie to the stick side to take the early lead 1-0. At the 12:00 mark Warkworth was try- ing to clear the zone when Natasha Burgess kept the ring in- side the blueline and after split- ting the defence tucked one under the sliding goal tender for an ear- ly 2 goal lead. Fifteen seconds after the se- cond Port goal Amanda Wakeford . took control of the ring inside the Warkworth zone, over to Natasha Burgess in front and with a good back hand put the ring over the shoulder of the goalie to take a commanding 3 goal lead. Everyone in the Scugog Arena knows how Warkworth can play ringette when given the chance, and play they did. Warkworth scored 4 unanswered goals on Port Perry, at 10:08, 7:30, 5:47 and 1:00 to take the lead 4-3 after one period of play. Port Perry's regular goalie was out of the line-up due to illness but Diane Vanderligt backed her up and this being her second game in goal had to come up with several good saves early in the second period to keep her team in the game. At 13:35 Warkworth scored again on a good 3 way passing play. At 13:02 Amanda Wakeford put a nice pass on to Natasha Burgess' stick who one timed it to make the score 5-4 for Warkworth. Warkworth had Port hemmed in their own zone for a long time when finally they beat the Port goalie to go ahead 6-4. With time running out on the Port girls, Mandy Smart found Geni Taylor alone in front and in she goes to make the score 6-5 with 6:22 left. The next 3 minutes Warkworth was all over Port like yesterday's dinner and eventual- ly scored with 2:38 remaining. Warkworth scored again at 1:55 to give them an 8-5 lead. The score looked as if it was going into the record books as an 8-5 win for Warkworth. but somebody forgot to tell this to Mandy Smart who regained possession of the ring deep in the Warkworth game ena after turning and twisting got in- to position in front of the net and with a good backhander beat the Warkworth goalie cleanly to final- ly make the score 8-6 for Warkworth. Playing in goal for Port Perry was Diane Vanderligt who played quite well seeing her second game ever in goal came in a play-off game. Things didn't go very well for Port in this game but one thing didn't happen, They Didn't Give Up. Honorable Mention for Good Hustle goes to Geni Taylor and Honorable Mention for Good Defensive Effort goes to Leanne Wakeford. FORDER-PARKS INSURANCE BROKERS INC. 34 Water St., Port Perry, Ont.
