a a a i ee a -- ---- A -------------- Flea market to raise funds for air conditioning in Community Centre The Blackstock Recreation Complex Committee is sponsor- ing a giant community Flea Market to raise funds for air con- ditioning in the Community Cen- tre. Scheduled for June 1 at the Recreation Complex, it will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is a community-wide event, with peo- ple reserving table space and pay- ing a small portion of their sales spokesperson Blair Martyn, "This event has the potential to be a major shopping extravaganza and bargain burner for this area - an event that cost-conscious shoppers won't want to miss." Most community centres in the Uxbridge, Stouffville and Scugog area have air conditioning, and 'most centres received assistance with funding through provincial towards the fund. According to government grants. Initially, the The Environment by Janet Banting ENVIRONMENT WEEK 91 - # 1 Environment Week is celebrated annually during the first week of June, and this year's week {officially June 2-8} is coming up soon. According to Environment Canada, the em- phasis this year is on "both our individual and collective re- _ sponsibility for the environment." This column will let you | know about some of the many things planned for the week. Locally, Scugog Memorial Library will be hosting a dis- lay at which handouts will be available. Two "Green Tea arties" will be taking place: one for Toy Lending Library § members, and the other for the general public at the library on Thursday, June 6 at 7:15 p.m. The "Green Tea Party" is an £ idea that the Citizens for a Safe Environment {CSE} group in £ Toronto adapted from WHEN {Worldwide Home Environmen- & talists Network} in Vancouver, the purpose being to bring peo- \ ple together informally over a cup of tea or coffee to talk \ about ways we can "green" our lifestyles. The volunteers N planning this local event intend to cover the topics of "environ- \ mentally friendly" ways to shop and clean, and will also offer § \ tips on how to reduce household garbage. Participants will be { N more than welcome to share their own good ideas as well! § Nl There will be no admission charge for the party, but donations \ received will be used to cover expenses and 10 provide a do- Y nation to the CSE group for their help. On Sunday, June 9 from noon to 5 p.m. the new Durham \ Environmental Network {DEN} will be sponsoring a "Move-A- N Thon" at Heber Down Conservation Area to raise funds for lo- cal environmental groups. Participants arrange ahead of time for friends, relatives, or co-workers to sponsor them to cover all or part of the 10 kilometre route walking, running, or biking. §& The money raised is to be shared among the different envi- §& ronmental groups represented, DEN, and Durham Nuclear § Awareness {for expenses related to running the event}. Ifyou §& | would like more information about this event, call DNA and § : speak to Jan or Irene {phone: 725-1565). Anyone keen to § | support our new regional environmental group and looking for § someone to support, feel free to call me {985-3225} - | will be § happy to accept your pledge! : - 8 Here are a few suggestions for businesses looking for project ideas for Environment Week. Try to cut down on § waste in your store or business by minimizing the use of dis- § = posable packaging {e.g. styrofoam trays) and/or dishes {at § § the very least, outlaw'styrofoam cups}! Encourage customers § | to bring their own bags for purchases. Arrange for a free | waste audit of your business by calling Elaine Collis at Dur- ham Region Works Department {668-7721, collect if neces- § sary}. A waste audit will not only show the ways in which your & business creates waste, it will also detail how to reduce it. £ Launch an office 3 R's program using a committee of employ- | ee volunteers - contact the Recycling Council of Ontario hone: 960-1025 or 1-800-263-2849} for a copy of "The Of- {i ice Guide to Waste Reduction and Recycling." 3 If you have a great idea for an Environment Week project of your own, more power to you! My family is planning one in the form of a dandelion - exterminating project - an idea | got from Marjorie Lamb's book "2 Minutes a Day for a Greener | Planet" {available at Scugog Memorial Library}. She suggests } having a friend help you hand-pick weeds every Spring - the | idea being that you can visit while you do it, then return the | favour at your friend's place. | would do it that way if | could - but we need an army for our dandelion epidemic! We've invit- . ed a group of friends over to help us, then when we're done . we'll reward ourselves with some food, drink, and fun. It sounds a little crazy, | know, but it's got to beat spraying § those unpredictable chemicals! - If you are looking for some good reading, Scugog Memo- # rial Library certainly has oodles of good titles. I've just finished & Farley Mowat's "Rescue the Earth! Conversations with the § Green Crusaders," a very informative book based on inter- § views with 12 well-known environmental activists. David Su- § zuki's latest, "It's a Matter of Survival" makes for very compel- § ling reading too. If there is anyone out there who remains § unconvinced that the earth is in dire shape, this one is a §& must! The jiorary has many others, and also some good vide- 0s. Check it out : If you've been hanging back, waiting for someone else to do all the work to clean up our earth, Environment Week is a good opportunity to find out what you can do to help. Become nformed and help to spread the word. Remember - if you don't start being part of the solution, you are definitely part of the problem! 3 Blackstock Recreatitn Complex Committee expected similar fun- ding support, but their application was recently rescinded by the government. Rather than focus on the inequity of the situation, the local community has decided to be pro-active, and to resolve the issue without support from the province. This Flea Market is one of many fund raising initiatives currently underway. Spring brings with it showers, green grass, budding trees and the proliferation of yard sales. Many people have found this to be an enjoyable Saturday pastime. The only drawback is trying to follow obscure directions from a small newspaper notice. The Blackstock Flea Market over- comes this dilemma in that it pro- vides all of the pleasure of many sellers with only one location to find. Blackstock is one kilometer south of Highway No. 7A, 6 miles east of Port Perry, on Scugog Road. The Recreation Complex is on Church Street, just west of Scugog Road. Anyone interested in more details, or wishing to reserve table space, should call Blair Martyn at 986-5165. Everyone is invited to come out and enjoy the sales while helping to put the chill on the hot summer that lies ahead.
