Scugog's second annual Nonquon Triathlon took place last Saturday afternoon under bright sunny skies. A field of almost 60 men and women of all ages took part in the event, which also attracted a lot of spectators. The Nonquon Triathlon comprises of three segments; a 4 km canoe race, 10 - km bicycle race and finishes with a 4 km. run. About 30 canoes lined up at the start in front of Palmer Park at 12"30 and when the starters pistol sounded, took off towards the south end of Lake Scugog. The canoes made their way across the lake, then north and finally back to the lakefront beach. The team of Robert Baird and Mike Freeman showed their superiority during the canoe portion of the race, pulling far wl of their nearest competitor. s the canoes beached at the lakefront, racers ran to the bicycle compound, where they pulled on helmets and headed up through town along Queen Street on the next leg of the race. The 10 km. bicycle race took the competitors to west Man-chester, and north to Regional Rd. 8, where they turned east. Back in Port Perry, they turned south along Lilla St. to Queen and then returned to the lakefront. The final leg of the competition saw the runners heading back through town on the 4 km. run. There route took them along Queen St. to the top of the hill, then north along Old Simcoe St. to Reg. Rd. 8, east to Lilla St. and then along Lilla back to the lakefront. First to complete the grueling course was last years winner Robert Baird who was able to par 30 seconds off his 1990 time. First woman to finish the Nonquon Triathlon was Vivian vandenhazel who completed the course in 1:18:41.
