This past holiday weekend, the Port Perry Merchant Midgets were privileged, along with 32 other teams from across Ontario, to be competitors at the Canadian Elimination Games in Hagersville. The winning team will be representing Ontario at the Canadian Games to be held later this month in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. In game one on Friday night, we met and lost to Owen Sound 4-3. Port Perry started the second inning with Steve Laird getting to first on a catcher's error. Darrell Vander Slagt hit Steve into a force at second with one out. Richard Brough then proceeded to triple home Darrell from first. Jason Cochrane also got on base on a catcher's error, and both Steve and Richard were hit home on a two RBI single by Jason McBride. In the third inning, Steve hit a single, but was left stranded on third. In the fourth, Jason McBride got on with a walk and stole second. Unfortunately, he was thrown out at third, and John Ennis was left stranded at second after getting on with a single. Owen Sound scored one run in the fifth, and three runs in the sixth on two throwing errors to first. In the seventh, Port Perry started to threaten when Tim Timms hit a lead-off single, but got caught trying to stretch it in- to a double. Scott MacLennan hit a single and Jason McBride got on with a walk, but they were left stranded at second & third bases as the relief pitcher for Owen Sound struck out the next two batters. In spite of the loss, Brett Puckrin pitched a strong game, allowing only one earned run, three strike outs, one walk, and five hits. In the second game on Satur- day, Port Perry beat Peter- borough in a very close game by a score of 3-1. Peterborough scored their only run in the first inning. In the first, Steve Laird and Richard Brough were left strand- ed on the base after hitting singles. Scott MacLennan hit a single in the second but was also left stranded. In the third, John Ennis singl- ed with one out, and scored when Jason MacBride moved him to se- cond on a ground out. He then scored on a RBI single by Richard Brough who was left on second at the end of the inning. In the fourth, Port got the go- ahead run when Brad Moase led off with a single and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Scott MacLennan. Jason Cochrane then drove him home with a RBI single. In the seventh, Jason McBride hit a single which the fielder misplayed, and he was able to score the insurance run as the ball rolled to the center field fence. Richard picked up the win allowing one earned run on three hits and only two walks. In the third game, Port had a tough loss to Stratford by a score | of 4-2. Stratford scored two runs in the fourth and two in the sixth, although Richard and Brett allow- ed only five hits between them. Port then proceeded to load the bases, but left Jason McBride, Johp Ennis and Richard Brough stranded as the pitcher got the final strike out of the inning. In the sixth, Darrell Vanderligt held the Strat- ford team from scoring by mak- ing an excellent fielding play on a long ball which should have dropped in the gap. In this inning, Port scored their second run when Brad Moase got on base with an infield error. Dar- rell Vander Slagt then hit a single to put a man at second and third with none out. Scott MacLennan drove Brad home on a RBI single, and Port had a man at first and second and one out. Brett Puckrin then got a walk to load the bases. Jason McBride hit an infield grounder that allow- ed Stratford to force Darrell out at home. John Ennis also hit an infield grounder that the third baseman fumbled, but was able to throw home. The umpire called Scott out on a forced play that was not even close, a fact agreed to by the Stratford coach. With bases loaded, one run behind, and Richard's hot bat at the plate, who knows what the outcome might have been. The coaches and parents are proud of the play of the Port Midget Merchants. The team showed the best defense displayed so far this year, making some great plays to keep the scores close. If the team continues with this type of effort, we should see the Port Midget Merchants have a good chance at the ALL ON- TARIOS to be held on August 17-18 in Waterford. Games coming up are July 4: Scarborough at Port at 8:30 p.m. on the south diamond; July 9: Bramalea at Port at 8:30 p.m. on the south diamond; July 11: Port at Stouffville at 8:30 p.m. Greenbank Gamblers take two from Peterborough Tavern After a slow start in the Peter- borough City League, the Green- bank Gamblers are making a move to challenge for top spot. Last Monday night in Green- bank Park the Gamblers met Peterborough Red Onion Tavern in a double header and when the dust had cleared, the Gamblers had picked up a pair of wins and slipped past the Tavern team in- to third spot in the league. Peterborough I.C.G. still lead the league, followed closely by Winslow-Gerolamy Motors and next Monday night (July 8) the I.C.G. squad will be in Greenbank to play the Gamblers at 8:30 p.m. This game could set the stage for a real dog fight for first place, if the Gamblers can upset Brian Condon and company, and the Greenbank team have been play- ing well of late. The team has had a long string of injuries this year with John Tait, Terry Till, Mike Giroux and John Logeman all being sidelined for various lengths of time but - with the exception of John Logeman, the team is relatively healthy now and logeman is ex- pected back in the lineup next week. The double header last Monday with Peterborough Tavern saw veteran playing coach Ken Goreski make his 1991 mound debut with the Gamblers and he pitched the first two innings, giv- ing up three runs. Mark Goreski came on in relief in the third inn- ing and shut down the Peter- borough team the rest of the way. Bill Buys started for Peter- borough but the Gamblers scored five runs off him in two innings, courtesy of Buys wildness and some timely hitting by Green- bank, with Trevor Till cashing two Gambler runs with long sacrifice fly balls. Dave Ruthowski relieved Buys in the second inning and pitched shutout ball the rest of the game. In game two of the double header, Wayne Wells started for Greenbank and Terry Nagler for Peterborough but this game saw the Gambler bats come alive as they pounded out 13 base hits en route to a convincing 9-0 victory. Wayne Wells allowed only three hits and helped his own cause with a towering two run home run blast in the first inning.
