Res. 985-9059 MARY WILSON...........ccevvennnn Res. 985-2235 Well, the shoe was on the other foot last weekend - it was our turn to hop in the car and go visiting. Usually, we're on the receiving end of a stream of visits from Em's huge family. But her cousin Hilton had offered us the use of his cabin up north and with some early hot weather predicted, we weren't about to say no. The car was like a big revolving door for a while as our teenagers, Kyle and Belinda, kept disappearing back into the house to get some- thing that they just couldn't live without for the weekend. Our cat Guildwood caught the "going away" scent in the air and immediately disap- peared. Since he has a somewhat delicate diges- tion anyway, we learned long ago not to subject him, and us, to car trips. Our next-door neigh- bour has a key and will pop in to fix him some Friskies. Just before we locked the door, Em set the timer for the lights and pulled some of the drapes and blinds in the house. We do this for security reasons, of course, but I read some- thing recently from The Hydro that said closing drapes during the day can also help to keep your house cooler in the summer by not allow- ing sunlight to pour through the windows. " Putting insulation in the attic will also help you cool. On a summer day, the sun can heat your attic to 54 degrees C (130 degrees F}. The heat then radiates down into your living areas and can make you mighty uncomfortable. Shading your windows can help you beat the heat, too. You can plant trees which help ventilate your house and provide shade and moisture to cool the air passing under them in the summer. Awnings and wooden louvres can also give you good shading. Of course, if Guildwood could talk, he'd be the expert to talk about how to keep cool. As we rolled down the driveway, our daughter Belinda cried "There he is!" Sure enough, Guildwood was sprawled in the shade on a bed of newly planted impatiens. "Off my flowers!" yelled my wife Em. Guildwood's response was a flick of his tail, and I swear as we drove away he was laughing at us.
