However, | am concerned at the lack of helmets being worn by cyclists of all ages. Parents must purchase and insist that their children wear a helmet while bicycling. To wear a helmet is mandatory for playing hockey, so should it be while riding a bicycle. The cost of a helmet is negligible when you consider what it is protecting. Riding a bicycle is far more dangerous than playing hockey. We owe 1t to our children to pro- vide the safest environment to en- joy their activities. In 1987 there were 75 bicycle deaths in Canada for people aged 0 - 19 and hun- dreds of other bicycle related in- juries. Most occur in falls from bicycles or as a result of the rider losing control. Bicycle accidents are the most common cause of head injury in children. Up to 85 per cent of serious head injuries could be prevented by wearing a bicycle helmet. Currently there is a program to encourage parents to purchase a bicycle helmet; it is called CANA- DIAN INJURY PREVENTION PROGRAM, sponsored by SAN- DOZ and THE CANADIAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION. "Helmets purchased through this program can be obtained at a 40 per cent saving. Information can be obtained by calling toll free 1-800-288-4280. Cycling is a great sport and an inexpensive mode of transporta- tion but it needs to be safer and one way to improve its safety record is by EVERYONE wear- ing a helmet when bicycling. Yours truly, Wayne Medford Wishes continued success To the Editor: Hats off to Tom and Daphne Mitchell! As a person who has been in the retail business for over 45 years, it is very gratifying to me to see that the entreprenurial spirit is alive and well in Port Perry. I walked by Settlement House on Saturday, June 22 and saw many people lining the sidewalk before 7 a.m. They were waiting for store opening to participate in The Longest Day of the Year Sale. This has been an annual event for the past several years for Settle- ment House. Years ago, John David Eaton told me that when you have peo- ple lined up to get into your store you must be offering good value. I have watched Settlement House expand from the original store to its present status with great pleasure. Tom and Daphne have done Port Perry proud. Con- tinued success is wished for them. Sincerely, Bird House Willy Bill Barr Request for Dr. Palmer info To the Editor: I am writing to ask if any of your readers can provide me with © information - clippings, pictures, etc. - re the original of Chiroprac- ty's Dr. (Daniel) Palmer. I know his monument is on the shore of Lake Scugog in Port Perry. My reason for asking is that a young friend here is entering the school in Chicago this fall and is most interested in Dr: Palmer's background, etc. I am a Port Perry native and have fond memories of my youth there.
