Ll | I \ hy hb) |! el ¥RONTIE Ann Barrett spends some quality time with a hopeful adoptee who Is currently staying at the Scugog/Uxbridge Animal Control Centre.' Pets are a priority at the Scugog/Uxbridge Animal Control Centre By Gillian Barfoot She may have started out as a dogcatcher, but she has also rescued turtles, birds, skunks, racoons, foxes, a not-very-wily coyote and a frightened fawn. Ann Barrett, the manager of the Scugog/Uxbridge Animal Control Centre, says she has never turned any animals away. Some of the animals were strays, some were lost, some have been neglected or aban- doned. "Some people know how to look after their animals. Some don't, or don't care," she says. Animals must be kept three working days before they can be adopted out, Mrs. Barrett explains. There are no limits on how long they are kept at the shelter. "We keep them as long as we have the space and we think ° they are adoptable," she says. A pet must have a good dis- position and not be dangerous or too old or sick, she explains. Although a veterinarian doesn't visit the animal control centre, a member of the staff often drives into Uxbridge to take a sick dog or cat -- or the occasional wild animal -- to the vet. Once Mrs. Barrett was called to rescue a fawn who had wandered out of the woods into a subdivision in Uxbridge. The neighbors had come out of their homes to watch, she re- members, and so she asked them to block the streets while she tried to catch it. The faun was eventually caught, after some patient ma- noeuvring, and spent the night at the vet's office before being handed over the the Ontario Humane Society. Another time she received a call from a woman who report- ed a dog curled up in the snow at the back of her house. The animal was brought into the pound and fed with dog food. "But it wasn't a dog," she says. "It turned out to be a coyote." She says that her first prior- ity isn't to find homes for the potential pets, it's to find good omes. She and her staff try to determine whether the animal is compatable before they will allow it to be adopted. "There's no point putting an animal in a home it's not suit- ed for." Mrs. Barrett started out in May 1969 as Uxbridge's first lady dogcatcher, and she kept the animals in her own home. Then in 1971 the animal shel- ter moved to a small building in Goodwood. Now there is a brand new animal control centre, on Re- gional Road 8, which opened in March. Although the townships of Uxbridge and Scugog cover the room and board, wages and maintenance costs of the cen- tre, she says that they couldn't afford a lot of the extra expens- es without private donations. There are three area busi- nesses where the animal con- trol centre has set up "doggy banks", and often when some- thing specific is needed, an ap- peal in the newspaper will re- sult in many offers of help. People donate time, money and supplies, says Mrs. Bar- rett. She asked for a freezer last week, and already she has received three separate offers. "And I could always use more blankets," she adds. Those who wish to adopt an animal from the centre are en- couraged to have a vet check it over and give it the proper shots. A dog costs $15 plus the cost of a dog license, and a cat costs $6. Owners are also encouraged to have their pets neutered, so that there will be fewer un- wanted animals. Why Go Anywhere Else?
