a I NL ir I aN "A Family Tradition for 125 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 9, 1991 - 17 R.H. Cornish valedictorian Todd Stewart's address The following is the Valedic- torian Address given by Todd Stewart at the R.H. Cornish Public School Grade 8 graduation recently. TODD STEWART Mr. Todd, Mr. DeJong, Dr. Vail, Mrs. Drew, parents, teachers and fellow graduates: Welcome. I'd like to begin my address with some lines by Tennyson - I think they fit our situation. I am a part of all that I have met; . Yet all experience is an arch wherethro' Gleams that untravell'd world, whose margin fades For ever and for ever when I move. How dull it is to pause, to make and end, To rust unburnish'd, not to shine in use!" As tho' to breathe were life. We, the graduating class of 1991, have finally reached our goal. A goal thought by most of us to be out of reach as we entered our intermediate years at R.H. Cornish. Yet through hard work, deter- mination and by not giving up we have all made it this far, to our Grade 8 graduation. Even though our goal has been achieved, we must not quit, though we may pause to stop and reflect upon the memories of our Grade 8 year. This year at Cornish was a busy one. With all the school work to be done, activities and sports to take part in, not many of us have notic- ed the great deal of change that has taken place in each and every one of us. We have all grown physically as well as mentally and emotional- ly. Over the year we have all matured, become more self- assured, less timid and hopefully become a little more responsible. Socially Grade 8 is an impor- tant year for growth, consolida- tion of friendships and a maturing of our personalities. I feel that we as students made the most of this year in that respect. It's impor- tant that we're all ready for high school academically and socially, for they both go hand in hand. It's due to the dedication and hard work of our teaching staff and administration that our school has so many activities to offer. They have provided oppor- tunities to participate in a wide variety of interesting activities. We've been offered trips to Ganaraska and Quebec, Children's summer courses Durham College's Continu- ous Learning Division is offer- ing summer courses for chil- dren aged 8-12, beginning this month. Our teachers have shown great dedication, not only in the classroom, but by sacrificing their time and energy to help make our education more en- joyable.. They expected us to behave and when we didn't we paid the penalties. There will be many moments for each of us that we will always remember, when we showed our strengths, our maturity, our ridiculous side and human weaknesses. Our teachers deserve a lot of appreciation for helping us to reach our goals and this crucial step in our education. In our list of thank yous we can't forget our parents and the people who have supported us at home. I'm sure some of you are wondering where the time has gone. To you it seems only yester- day that you dropped us off for our first day of kindergarten. Somehow the time has slipped by and now we're all grown up, or at least we think we are. You were always there for us when we needed that extra push or helping us review and prepare for tests and assignments. You kept the pressure on until we brought home our dirty gym socks from our overflowing lockers, and of- fered your time and driving skills so we could attend our after school activities. You have also been there to help us in the preparation for this graduation, making that special dress, scouting the shopping malls for the right pair of shoes or helping with the task of finding our first tie. Over the years, through the ac- tivities, the students at Cornish have developed a great sense of pride for our school. Everywhere we go we do our best to represent our school well. We have a desire to win and achieve in everything we take part in, but when we win, it's not just for ourselves or for our team - we're winning for the school, try- ing our hardest to keep Cornish on top where it has been for so many years and where it will stay. We've always felt, and it's often been said that we uphold the highest ideals of sportsmanship, and have proven ourselves good citizens of R.H. Cornish. Our new situation at high school may appear uncomfortable at first but with a positive attitude, we can meet all challenges. The next five years of .our school careers offers us many challenges. We must set our sights not only on working and playing hard but gear ourselves for life, and goals that go beyond high school. Although our goal of graduation has been reached, it must not be thought of as an end, for life con- tinues and so must we. We must keep setting new goals as we move along. Yet as we move on we must take with us the memories of our past, the good and the bad, for they have made us what we are. For we are indeed a part of all that we have met.
