30 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 9, 1991 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR PORT S Bantam boys fastball team finalists in Bramalea tourney Port Perry Bantam Boys Fastball team had a very busy and successful week, as they won two York-Durham League games, and were finalists in the Bramalea Tournament. In league play the Bantams defeated Goodwood 9-1 and Markham 1-0. Jeff Card pitched a strong game for Port Perry to record the win. He allowed only five hits. John Searle of Markham allow- ed only two hits and suffered the OSS. Port Perry scored the only run of the game, as Steven Stiles reached second base on an error by the Markham shortstop and scored on the first of two base hits by Grant Kay. Port Perry did not commit an error in this game, that was com- pleted in one hour for a fine ex- hibition of softball by these two . teams. Port Perry travelled to Bramalea on Saturday, and played the first game against the host team, and defeated them 6-0. Denis Smith pitched a "tidy" two hitter and struck out nine Bramalea hitters. Steven Stiles, Steven Parish and Kent Jamieson all had singles in the third inning, when the Port Perry boys scored three runs. Corey Bricknell had two hits, with Gavin Cochrane, Denis Smith and Todd Smart all having one hit each. Game two in the tournament put Port Perry against Pickering and the local team won by a 7-4 score. Chad Venning picked up the win and contributed a double. Corey Bricknell started this game with a three-run home run in the first inning. Duane Empringham and Todd Smart had two hits apiece while Gavin Cochrane had a tri- ple and Chad Kearns a single. In game three Port Perry lefeated Thornhill 6-4 with Jeff Card picking up the win. Steven Parish and Kent Jamieson each had two hits in this contest with Kent having a two-run home run. Other hits were by Jeff Card, Steven Stiles and Denis Smith with a pinch-hit triple. This three game sweep of the round-robin tournament put Port Perry in the championship game against a strong team from Sarnia. Port Perry sent Denis Smith to the mound for this game and the "slender" left-hander responded with another excellent perfor- mance as he allowed only five hits. John McLean started for Sarnia and allowed the Port Perry team four hits. Port Perry threatened to score in the second inning when Jeff Card and Denis Smith both singl- ed and Kent Jamieson walked to load the bases but could not score. Steven Stiles doubled in the fourth inning and Kent Jamieson singled in the fifth inning but on both occasions the team came up empty. Sarnia scored the only run of the game in the top of sixth inn- ing on two base hits. The coaching staff was very proud of the team during this tournament as they played fine defensively and got excellent pit- ching. Corey Bricknell and Grant Kay did an excellent job behind the plate on a very long, hot day. Port Perry plays Pickering tonight (Tuesday) at 8:30 p.m. at the Lakefront Park and travels to Cobourg on Saturday for a tournament. This past week saw the Port Perry Midget Merchants split a home and home series with the Scarborough Reds. In game one, Port started strong, and were ahead 7-0 at the end of the second .inning. The game ended with a Port win, 8-5. Brett Puckrin pitched a good game, allowing five hits, four earned runs and four strike outs with no walks. Game two in Port was a very close match, but unfortunately, the home team lost 3-2 on a well- pitched game by Richard Brough. Richard has a history of pitching well against Scarborough, but ended up losing the last two games without allowing an earn- ed run. He allowed three hits, no earned runs, with four strike outs and only one walk. The next time, the team owes Richard a win against Scarborough. Atom players treat fans to a lot of action Another great week of Atom Soccer action has come and gone, and once again, the fans were treated to lots of action and ex- citement on Wednesday evening. A special thank you to all of the coaches for handing in such ex- cellent game reports - you make your convenor's job much easier! On field one, Van Camp extend- ed their unbeaten streak by defeating the Legion 4-0. Van Camp had another great team ef- fort, with Jason Whitworth scor- ing three goals and Paul Chiusolo scoring one. Jamie Mouland and Shawn VanAndel both played outstandingly on defense, and Steve Nagy and Amy Forbes shared the shutout in goal. For the Legion, Robert Sheehan played a good game in net, and Greg Lansdell put in a strong all- around performance. On field two, Port Perry Prin- ting narrowly defeated Coldwell Bankers 2-1. Coldwell Bankers had an exciting comeback at- tempt in the second half, with Phil Krohn scoring their goal, and Sarah Smith and Crystal Tim- mons played strongly throughout. Excellent passing was seen by all team members. The goal scorers for Port Perry Printing were not available. On field three, Nuts About Chocolate trounced Manvers 1 by a 5-0 count. All players put forth an excellent offensive effort. Ken Ellis blasted out for a hat trick, scoring three goals while Joey Drebit contributed the other two. Ian Garrett displayed super agili- ty in net, supplying the shutout. Leading the defense was Jason Crozier. On field four, Port Perry Dynamos and Manvers 2 finished in a 2-2 tie. Manvers markers were scored by Peter Bernard and Christian Bridge, while Gord Kilner and Chris Medford replied for the Dynamos. Other excep- tional players were Jared Lee and Dacen Moran for Manvers, and Aaron Chambers and Kenny Lukas for the Dynamos. This weekend the Scugog Youth Soccer Club hosts their annual Festival Days tournament at the soccer fields. Twenty-four teams will be involved, with play in the Squirt (under 8), Atom (under 10) and Mosquito (under 12)division. The quality of play will be well worth seeing, so if you can make it, come on out to the soccer fields and catch some great soccer ac- tion this weekend. Sports Camp in Blackstock The Township of Scugog is of- fering a Sports Camp the week of August 12 - August 16, in Blackstock. Children will enjoy a high quali- ty camp program at Cartwright Central Public School. Sports Camp provides campers with excellent leadership in a wide variety of sporting activities. Campers will experience skill development and participation in a wide variety of sports such as :soccer, floor hockey, basketball, baseball and many more. Campers will be bused to Bird- seye Pool on Tuesday and Thurs- day for an afternoon of swimming and water fun. The program runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The cost of this program is $50/child or $125 fami- ly rate. An excellent program to keep those Blackstock and surrounding areas children active this summer. Midget BB championship banner missing At the recent Port Perry Minor Hockey Awards Night the banner presented to the Precision Con- struction Midget BB Champion- ship team went missing. Officials of the organization are hopeful that it will be returned so that it can be hung in the arena to honour the team's achievement.
