(705) 357-3121 June 29 race attracts largest crowd of season Kawartha Downs raceway news by Grant C. Wade Once again, the Ontario Sires Stakes ignited the flame under area racing fans and provided the largest crowd of the 1991 season to Kawartha Downs on Saturday, June 29. The 2,144 who gathered at the Fraserville oval were treated to a track record, and a couple of upsets in the $43,000 event for three year old pacing filllies. Rick Webb gave Starlette Falcon a perfect trip behind pace- setter Abby Harbor to cut 3/5tns of a second off the track record when she stopped the teletimer in 1:57.1. The three year old General Star filly sat right behind Abby Harbor through most of the mile with fractions of :28.3 - :58.3 - 1:27.2, and the pair battled right to the wire with a nose difference at the finish. The time was a per- sonal best for the filly as well. She's owned by Thomas Burrison of Port Colborne and G R W Stable of Mississauga. One of the upsets came in the fourth division when She's Mine Two broke her maiden in 2:00.2. Jeff Lilley trains and drives the daughter of Savvy Almahurst for Karl Krause of Leamington. This one was another close finish with the margin a neck over Aint No Fool and Walter Whelan. Wanda Full was only half a length further back in third. Lilley was asked in the winner's circle if he knew how close it was at the wire and he replied that "'I was really too busy driving my own filly to worry about the others." The other upset came in divi- sion five when previously undefeated Armbro Justify made a break approaching the final turn and finished a long way back in sixth. Little Black Book step- ped off the gate smartly to get the lead and never looked back for driver Carman Hie. The Legal Notice filly paced to a new mark of 1:58.1 off fractions of :28 - :59.1 -1:28.3. Hie said after the race 'I did not know that Armbro Justify had made the break." The winner is owned by John Hayes Stable Ltd. of Beamsville, Bob Standing of Halton Hills, Dick White of Lon- don and Barry Pound of Scar- borough. Trinity Point (Dallas Almahurst) finished second for Ray McLean and Sipping Colleen was third for Gord Brown. The Stan Brown trainee had the best finish of any of the local starters. Judie Johnston's Idylwood Omaha which had been installed as the morning line choice in the sixth was scratched due to illness. A much awaited rain in the area was ill-timed at best as the drops began when the sixth division went to the gate. The spirits of Daisy Harbor were not dampen- ed much, however, as she cap- tured her fourth win in as many OSS outings for Hornby owner John Grant. The Coal Harbor fil- ly held off a fast closing Fancy Harbour to win by a couple of lengths in 1:58.1 for driver Ted Huntbach. Veteran Harold McKinley was handling the lines for Fancy Harbour. Al Bowman shipped in from Vernon Downs with Classy Sis and made the trip worthwhile when the Fundamentalist filly won in 1:58. She had a very easy time of it winning by five lengths with first call at every station. Fractions were: 28.4- :59.1-1:27.2 Hornby Flooz was the closest competitor at the wire. In the lid lifter, Beyond Her Peers got the front early for driver Jim Ritchie, who was "happy to get the lead early' and she went wire to wire in 1:58.4 to down Kristyans Choice by five lengths. The Mike Brown trainee is a daughter of Armbro Splurge which is owned by Provincial Standardbred Management Corp of Brampton. The Fillies and Mares Prefer- red was won by Hornby Dream for Dan LeBlonc. The eight year old daughter of Dream Maker had an easy time of it with a 2:00 clocking. J N Stryker, a two year old Dream Maker colt, broke his maiden for Bowmanville owner Joe Guest and trainer Ken Sucee. Guy LaRush was doing the driving. ' Bets Jig, a three year-old Brigadier General gelding took a 1:59.3 record for Gord Brown. Oshawa's Gilbert Magill trains and co-owns the colt with Brian Magill. Nealies Snap took advantage of the quick front end to win the last race in 2:01.2 for Guy LaRush. Dale Moncrieff trains the 11 year old for his mother Edna and father Ronald of Pickering and Norwood's Murray Ross. That was number 56 lifetime for Nealies Snap. On Thursday night, the same combination, LaRush and Mon- crieff scored a win with Tyrant B in the $15,000 calimer. The five year old son of Springfield step- ped off a 1:57.3 trip to beat Perfect Cameo and Shadows Bet- terhalf. It was the second straight for Tyrant B. Omaha of Oro won his second straight in the $10,000 claimer, too. He was driven by Murray Brethour for owner- trainer Barry Crowe of Bobcaygeon. Keno.Hanover made his first appearance behind the Gord Channing gate a winning effort for Peterborough owner-trainer- driver Gerald Lowery. The three year old Prakas colt trotted a 2:05.2 trip. Nicky Gass made it two in a row for Reg Gassien in the $2,500 claimer. Pedders Hill won her second straight "Baby" race for Judie Johnston and driver Doug Hie. NOTE: A pair of local colts did very well in OSS action at Kingston on Thursday. Life In- terest was second and Twin B Dreamer was third. Life Interest, a two year old Balanced Image is owned by Debbie Ferrier of Fraserville, trained by Terry McVeay and driven by Allan Nicholls. Twin B Dreamer is co- owned, trained and driven by Cin- dy Horner of Peterborough. He's a Dream of Glory. Both are ex- pected to see action when the OSS for two year old colt trotters comes to Kawartha Downs on Ju- ly 6. WWF stars coming The stars of the World Wrestl- ing Federation return to the Oshawa Civic Auditorium on Thursday, August 1 at 7:30 p.m. An outstanding card has been signed with a triple main event, including an Intercontinental Ti- tle Match. The first of three main events will showcase the hottest fued that the WWF has seen in many years when the Ultimate Warrior locks up with The Undertaker. Since making his Canadian debut here in Oshawa, the Under- taker, along with his manager Paul Bearer, have taken the WWF by storm. Their morbid thoughts and actions have set new standards for poor taste, which ultimately led to the attempted suffocation of the Ultimate War- rior in a locked casket. Needless to say the Ultimate Warrior has vowed revenge. The second main event will pit Big Boss Man and the Mountie against one another. Both men claim to be the only law and order in the WWF but they each go about it in different ways. The Mountie practices ter- ror tactics on his opponents, which does not sit well with Boss Man or the fans. Following their clash here on August 1 only one man will be able to claim jurisdic- tion in the WWF. The third part of the triple main event will be an Intercontinental Title match with Mr. Perfect defending against the number one contender "British Bulldog" Davey Boy Smith. Mr. Perfect, now being manag- ed by Coach, is at a distinct disad- vantage in this bout as rumour has it that Coach is trying to in- still a new style in Mr. Perfect which he has not totally adapted to yet. As a result do not be too Surprised if a new champion is crowned here in Oshawa. ed on August 1 when theHigh fy: {2 % to Oshawa Civic ing quick paced Rockers (Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty) collide with Orient Express (Tanaka and Kato). Other matches will feature Texas Tornado versus the Warlord and Koko B. Ware squares off with the hated Colonel Mustafa. Tickets for this spectacular WWF presentation are on sale now and are available at the Oshawa Civic Auditorium Box Of- fice daily.
