1 xX "A Family Tradition for 125 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 9, 1991 - 3 Passenger Association passes back the buck From Page 1 The private sector, he says, is out to make a profit and will be paid over the contracted five- year period regardless of the ridership. "They could be running the buses empty all day and they wouldn't care less," he says. Mr. Pagnuelo says he doesn't understand why the govern- Peng won't use the existing rail ine. "The infrastructure is there," he says. "It's a good opportunity to do same experimental things ontheline." One such project could be a rapid transit line, he says. But if the government doesn't want to try that route, the area communters would be more than happy travelling to and from work in the outdated single-level GO Trains that are sitting in storage at the Dan- forth station. "No one is asking for a Cadil- lac. We're only looking for a Volkswagon." "Ifa rail service is offered, Mr. Pagnuelo says the commuters would pay their own way. Autos damaged Police are investigating the theft and damage to various ve- hicles at Scala Bros. Auto Parts & Wreckers Ltd. which oc- curredondJuly 2. According to Police, a total of six vehicles were damaged and parts were taken from the vehi- cles. "Noone is looking for a public hand-out. No one is asking for (a subsidized ride to work). We would pay our own way instead of having other people foot the ill." But all of the association's concerns have fallen on deaf ears, Mr. Pagnuelo says. The government which said it would be accessible to the peo- ple has dodged the association at every bend. "The government is supposed to listen to the people. They def- initely aren't," he says. Since the NDP party came into power in September, the passenger association has only been suecessful in setting up one meeting with Transport Minister Ed Philips, Mr. Pag- nuelo says. And that meeting was very brief. The association also invited the seven area Members of Pro- vinical Parliament to a public meeting on the matter in Ash- burn, but not one of them showed up. Durham East MPP Gord Mills defended himself and his colleagues in a telephone con- versation with the Star Satur- day afternoon. Mr. Mills explained that the meeting was held on a Thurs- day evening and parliament was sitting until midnight. All MPPs who live within driving distance must stay to ensure a quorum, he says. "There was no way we could get permission to go," Mr. Mills says. Fi [iE 985-1415 Bring in 2 Rolls of film - 1 processed FREE! The style of service the gov- ernment is looking at includes buses with morning newpa- pers, a television and wash- room, to make the commute more comfortable. Mr. Mills says a number of factors have led to the NDP's -- ---- LITE Passenger Association member Paul P ro ery, WL decision to cancel the idea of GO Train service to the area. "The money's not there and at this stage, neither is the rid- ership tomake it go." The idea of using old rolling stock should be abandoned by the association, Mr. Mills says, adding it is antiquated and un- reliable. "Part of the problem with the train is having adequate rider- ship and they really don't to jus- tify the GO Train going into Pe- terborough," Mr. Mills said. "Why should the folks subsi- dize the people going into work? It should have crossed their (the commuters) minds when they moved to Port Perry," he says. r. Mills says he is willing to hear his constituent's concerns on thisissue. agnuelo of Little Britain says the NDP has broken its election promise of rail service from Toronto to the Peterborough/Havelock area. Mr. Pagnuelo and Port Perry resident Dave Lester recently attended a Queen's Park rally host- ed by People Against the NDP Budget. There, the estimated $9.5 million it may spend on Im the men told the government to take back plementing a bus service for the area. The People don't want a bus, they want rall service, the passenger association charges. FOE I EE IEE TO TY Rr SPU SG SE SY GREAT SELECTION! GREAT SAVINGS!
