"A Family Tradition for 125 Years" Plans for Ice Palace '92 underway for next winter Plans for the 1992 Port Perry Open Air Ice Palace are well un- derway, an organizer says. Lang Cope says the facility, which saw its first season of op- eration in the winter of 1991, will be "bigger and better this year. _The plans for the outdoor fa- cility include an ice surface of approximately 200 metres by 120 metres, a lighting system, and decorations including trees over the entire surface . There are also plans for washrooms, and boot check, and change- room areas. Portions of the facilities are already in place as the organiz- ers plan to winterize the exist- ing baseball gazebo. Mr. Cope presented the plans for the upcoming year to Coun- cil, and requested financial aid for the facility which he stressed is totally a non-profit venture. GRADUATE LAURI-ANN ALDRED Chosen grade 8 Valedictorian. Lauri- Ann is a former Port Perry student. She graduated from Gr. 8 at St. Mary's School, Brockville. As well as receiving a trophy for her valediclory address, she also won 5 medals for the highest mark in her class in Math, English, Science, French & Music. Congratulations Lauri-Ann. Nana & Papa Wilson The rink depends on the con- tributions from local business- es, as well as the admission money it collects to maintain the ice surface. Mr. Cope said if the organizers do not receive additional funding, they might run at a deficit. Mr. Cope estimated that the facility, which is billed the "Largest Maintained and Flooded Outdoor Recreational Rink in the World", could oper- ate for less than $10,000. Depending on the weather conditions, the organizers are hoping to have the rink open by the first week in January. They learned from last year's experi- ence however, that Mother Na- ture is not always accommodat- ing. Warm weather postponed the opening of 1991's season by one week. In total the rink was operational for 14 days. He says the rink will close on February 28. Mr. Cope pointed to the bene- fits of the facility, which he says affects the whole community. Not only can all the residents enjoy skating on the ice, but the local businesses realize extra business when the ice is opera- tional. Council was unable to make a decision on the request for\ funding as any allocation of money for 1992 would be the re- sponsibility of the newly elect- ed council in November.
