Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Cawker and family of Sudbury are spending a few days with the Sam Cawkers and other relatives in the vicinity. 20 YEARS AGO - Wednesday, July 21, 1971 Chalet Farms Limited on Union Avenue, Prince Albert ceased operation of its poultry and egg business. Port Perry's Post Office, a landmark building which is approximately 70 years old, was to be torn down and replaced with a new single-storey modern structure. As of 1981, the post office is still standing and has undergone extensive renovations and this landmark lives on. Van Camp Construction and the Port Perry Fair Board have signed a contract to have renovations made to the race track and a new market ring for the commercial steer class on the fairgrounds property. Cecil Smith, Scugog and Don Mason, Port Perry were the lucky fishermen this week when they caught six small mouth bass weighing a total of 30 pounds. The two men were fishing at the mouth of the Nonquon River. ~ 10 YEARS AGO Wednesday, July 22, 1981 Ray Penney of Port Perry has been appointed Scugog Township's new building inspector and by-law enforcement officer. Dale D. Wallace graduated from Lakehead University receiving a diploma in Forest Technology. Teresa Wygerde was honored in Toronto on Saturday when the Queen Mother presented her with the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh gold Medal Award. The newly formed Port Perry Rotary Club held its official Charter Night last Thursday with a dinner and dance at the Catholic Hall in Port Perry. After six years of study, Dr. Helen Ottenbrite of Port Perry has written and passed the advanced exams of the Board of Sacro Occipital Research and has become the first woman in Canada to receive certification. The award is the highest and most prestigious available in the practice of Sacro Occipital Technique. Leanne Kerr, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Everett Kerr of R.R. 2, Port Perry recently received her A.R.C.T. Piano Solo Performers with honour standings at the Royal Conservatory of Music, University of Toronto. Merlin and Dora Dowson happy to celebrate 50th anniversary Merlin and Dora Dowson, longtime residents, and business people in Port Perry, happily celebrated 50 years of marriage last week, at an open house held by their family at the Oddfellows Lodge. The couple were married in Port Perry United Church on July 19, 1941 and spent the first night of their honeymoon in the Royal York Hotel in Toronto." Little did they know last Friday, when their children, Ken, Shirley and Nancy told them to be prepared for an overnight stay, that they would make the trip to Toronto once again in celebration of their 50th year together. Mrs. Dowson told the Star that her son Ken was at their home when their daughters arrived at the door announcing "you chauffeur is here." It was their first time in a limousine, and Mr. Dowson said it was sure better than the borrowed coupé they used for the trip half a century earlier. Arriving at the Royal York, the Dowson's were treated to an evening of food and entertainment in the famous Imperial Room, and their anniversary was announced over the PA system to the crowd. The next morning, the excited couple were met by their chauffeur driven limousine and brought back home. It was an exciting event for Mr. and Mrs. Dowson, and one they say theyll never forget. Following their wedding, Mr. Dowson enlisted in the army and was gone for the next four years. They lived in Oshawa for a year before moving back to Port Perry where they live to this day. The Dowson's were part- icularly pleased to see 85 year old Mrs. Ruth Purdy attend, a second cousin to the family. Mr. Dowson started in the food business in 1949 in a small store on Queen Street, and remained there until 1976 when the business was moved to Port Perry Plaza. Although he doesn't work full-time anymore, Mr. Dowson is still president of Dowson's In addition to the many friends and visitors present, the Dowson's received a plaques from the office of Premier Bob Rae, M.P. Ross Stephenson and Scugog Township. When asked if there was any fond memories they would like to share, Mr. and Mrs. Dowson both agreed that Port Perry and area had been very good to their family, and they appreciated everything that had been done for them. "We are just very happy to have been able to celebrate this anniversary," Mrs. Valu-Mart. Dowson concluded. Merlin and Dora Dowson had lots of reason to smile on Sunday as more than 200 people attended an open house to honor the couple on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary.
