Local 4-H members taking part in Connections Canada exchange Local 4-H members are con- necting with their counterparts in Peace River, Alberta. Ten 4-H members from Dur- ham Region and an equal num- ber of 4-Hers from the Peace River area are taking partin an exchange program called Con- nections Canada. They were selected for the ex- change program based on their involvement in 4-H and in the community. The Peace River contingent arrived in the Scugog Township area on July 9 for an eight-day stay. The members, aged 15-18, stayed at the homes of the local 4-Hers. As part of the exchange pro- gram, the Ontario and Alberta 4-Hers visited several attrac- tions including Windfields Farm, Darlington Nuclear Plant, Cullen Gardens, the CN Tower, SkyDome, Carada's Wonderland, and Niagara Falls. They also attended a dairy meeting in Sunderland and participated in a 4-H judging competition at Wilson's Sales Arena. According to Durham's rural organization specialist Sarah Boswell the Peace River dele- gates noticed a change in the pace of lifestyle in Ontario, es- pecially in Toronto, and they noticed 'a difference in the structure of the 4-H clubs as compared to the West. 4-H leader Maria Schillings told the Port Perry Star local members worked hard raising funds for the Ontario portion of SiONemMogT 8, & @, v Care Genet? The members worked at the Canada Day celebrations in Oshawa, at the Queen's Plate, the Brooklin Fair and the Pef- ferlaw picnic. They also sold cheese to raise money. On Wednesday, Ms. Schil- lings said she was impressed with the success of the Ontario portion of the exchange and said she is looking forward to visiting Peace River. The Alberta 4-Hers headed home on Wednesday for a rest before hosting the local mem- bers. Durham West members left yesterday (Monday) and will re- turn next week. Their airfare is" funded by the Department of the Secretary of State. Creative arts camp "All the world's a stage!" And your child can be the star at- traction at Creative Arts Camp beginning July 22. Children enjoy the perform- ing arts such as drama, music and dance. But the visual arts such as painting, sculpting and crafts aren't forgotten. If your child has an artistic flare or enjoys arts and crafts, this program may be for them. Campers will be guided through a variety of unique arts and crafts experiences. Imagi- nation, and creativity will & encouraged in all campers. This program includes swim- ming each afternoon at Birds- eye Pool. The cost of the program is $60.00 per week per child, run- ning from Port Perry United Church beginning July 22 to August 2. Seagrave hosted a youth Lob Ball Tournament this past weekend when six teams par-. ticipated. The Seagrave Country Style Donuts team won the cham- pionship defeating Lil Gators from Port Perry - score was 9 - 4. The consolation game was won by another Seagrave team, McTag- gart Electric who defeated Centennial Lanes of Port Perry - score 19 - 14. Congratulations to both Seagrave teams! A good time was had by all people (players and watchers). Thanks to the Greenbank and the other Port Perry teams for par- ticipating. Best wishes to Brian McTaggart - a speedy recovery from the team. . Sympathy is extended to Ivan and Marion Barrett in the sudden passing of Marions sister-in-law, Evelyn Holiday of Columbus last Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Brian Sturman and son Ian from Nuneaton England are visiting with the Ken Sturman family and other relatives. Many Seagrave Brownies and Girl Guides returned home on Saturday after spending a week at Camp Adelaide in Haliburton. Our daughter, Katherine, had a great time as did many others 1'm sure. Seagrave Church News: The: stewards conducted the church service on Sunday with Len Som- merville leading. Mark Sturman very ably gave the sermon, The Cost of Being A Disciple, Musical selections were given by Darrin, Kristal and Lynda Davis of Oshawa. The Pulpit Committee is very grateful to all those who have helped with the summer ser- vices. Rev. David Shepperd will be in charge this next Sunday - Ju- ly 28th. There will be no church services during August. Myself and my family are en- joying a visit from my cousin and her family from England. Scugog Island news by Theresa Wood Reta Reader has been doing the Scugog Island news for a great many years. We are sorry to hear of her recent illness. We wish Mrs. Reader a speedy recovery and hope to see her writing for us again soon. On July 23rd Norma and Jim Tower will be celebrating their Silver Wedding Anniversary. Happy 25th. Birthday greetings go out to Freda and Norm Durdle. Also, a special Happy Birthday to Sylvia Wolf whom many know as our former Beaver leader and one of the island bus drivers. We won't mention which number this is for Sylvia. Welcome home to the many Brownies, Girl Guides and Pathfinders on the Island who were away at Camp Adelaide this past week. I know their brothers really missed them. Dont't forget about the Pioneer Camp coming up at the Museum. Local residents attend Salvation Army concert aa Rev. George Malcom con- ducted the service at Burns Church on Sunday. He will be with us again next Sunday. His sermon was titled 'Accountable to God,' with his text from Romand 14, verse 12. Bernice Gardner, Mrs. Irene Moore, Mrs. Alma Duff and Karenhad a pleasant visit at Mrs. Ruth Short and Mrs. Murtle Banks cottages at Sturgeon Point recently. Visiting with Mr. and Mrs. W. Grant and Sheila Parrott visited Cecil and Jean Vicars of Fergus a week ago Sunday. Grant and Sheila and family attended a family picnic near Madoc last Sunday. Mrs. Ruth Purdy of Orangeville spent a few hays with Doug and Florence Ashton. On Sunday, Mrs. Purdy, Doug and Florence attended the 50th wedding anniversary for Merle and Dora Dowson.
