"A Family Tradition for 125 Years" Scugog Fire Department will be host to extrication event Rescue teams from 10 fire de- partments across Durham Re- gion, Little Britain and Lind- say will compete in the first extrication competition to be held in Port Perry. i Department . Fire Hall #1 will be hosting the com- petition to be held September 7 on the parking lot on Water Birger known as the old arena pad. The competition will run from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Water Street between North and Queen Streets will be closed to traffic for the event. Extrication is the term used for getting trapped victims out of vehicles after accidents. According to Deputy Chief Charles Lown, the 10 teams will compete in two scenarios, one in which hydraulic tools will be used, and one with hand tools. The competitions will begin 156 minutes apart in two differ- ent pits so the action will be non-stop. Firefighters from Hall #1 will be running the event, so they will not enter the competitions, but Scugog Hall #2 is expected toenter a team. A large crowd is expected to turn out to watch the rescue teams at work. There will be no admission charge to watch the competi- tions, and bleachers will be set up for the spectators. Also on hand for the day will be the Fire Marshal, and the air ambulance (helicopter) which will land and allow spectators tolook inside. Development fees By Scott Anderson The Township of Scugog has no reason to raise its develop- ment fees, says Mayor Howard Hall. According to Mayor Hall, the current development charges levied by the Township are in line with the services it pro- vides and therefore the munici- plisy has no reason to "up the ee. He says it would be quite le- gitimate for the municipality to raise the fee ifit introduces new or improved services to the mu- nicipality. With these in- creased services would come a need to increase the cost. The current levy is approximately $4,000. Under the current develop- ment charges arrangement the Region of Durham operates un- der a two-tier system in which both a municipal and a regional fee is collected. Although the Township isnot considering an increase on the lot levies, it is not the same sto- ry for the region. Regional Council is considering raising the levy by as much as 22.1 per cent. Under the proposed scheme the existing rate would in- crease to $8,263 as of Novem- ber 1, 1991 for a single de- tached unit, from the current $6,759. Not only would the ex- isting rates see increases of be- tween 2.5 per cent to 17.7 per cent, but a new general purpose section including administra- tive facilities, police, and homes for the aged would also be add- ed. Following a public hearing into the development charges Claudia Fieder, chairman of the Urban Development Insti- tute for Durham, told the press Three companies which man- ufacture rescue tools will also have displays set up during the day, and their tools will be used by the rescue teams in the com- petitions.
