Our 15-year old son Kyle has gone off to baseball camp and we're expecting a call from his twin sister Belinda to let us know she's ar- rived at a friend's cottage for the week. Em and I have both taken some holidays, too. We're getting up when we feel like it, and generally loafing around and enjoying it. But we both know by the end of the week we'll be craning our necks for a glimpse of Belinda com- ing up the driyeway and counting the days until Kyle comes home. Funny, isn't it, how you can't wait to unload them for a while, but then as soon as they're gone, you miss 'em. It's been hot as blazes lately, and Em was saying that she wished we didn't have to turn on the oven. "Well," I said, "We don't. There's just the two of us - let's see if we can get through the week without it." And Em said it was a good cooling idea and one that will prob- ably save us electricity too. With our toaster oven, the slow cooker and the electric frying pan, we can avoid using the oven entirely. I started getting interested in this energy saving/cooling challenge, so I went down to my basement library of pamphlets from The Hydro to find out some other neat things you should know about small appliances. When you buy small appliances, look for the Canadian Standards Association {CSA} la- bel. It's required by law and tells you that the appliances conform to the national safety stan- dards. As far as saving energy goes, small appli- ances are winners, especially your slow cooker {"crock-pot"} and your microwave oven. We've ordered a microwave, as a matter of fact, but won't be getting it for a while. When you use your small appliances, be careful not to overload the electrical circuits. For instance, don't use your toaster oven with another high-wattage appliance on the same outlet. So there we were in the kitchen getting din- ner ready when the phone rang. We knew it was Belinda, and both of us almost broke our necks to be the first to get to the phone. We al- ready miss her. Funny, isn't it? This newspaper, in conjunction with Onta- rio Hydro, is bringing you Phil's Basement to help "bring home" ideas on how to save energy. To receive the brochures "Energy Efficiency in Appliances," call Ontario Hydro at 1-800-263- 0 and tell them Phil sent you. A BR 3R JAGR
