"12. PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 30, 1991 "Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Cholce" Waiting approvals for 400 unit development By Scott Anderson A rezoning application has been submitted to the region and if approved could see a ma- jor residential housing develop- ment built in Port Perry. Rattleglen Investments Inc. has submitted the application to the regional planning de- artment to rezone a parcel of and on the southwest corner of Simcoe Street and Reach Street from residential on partial mu- nicipal services to residential on full municipal. According to Ronald Pugh, general manager for Rattle- glen, the company is planning to build a residential subdivi- sion of approximately 400 units. This would include a mixture from townhouses to single family houses, as well as an affordable housing site. The site, as it is presently zoned, allows for servicing by municipal water and septic tanks. But Mr. Pugh says they would like to extend the servic- ingbeyond a septic system. Rattleglen has been involved in the application process since COMMUNITY 10 CUTE KID CONTEST One vote for each of the following: FIRST & LAST NAME the spring, he said. The MNR has re- quested a storm water manage- ment report which outlines the developer's system for handling the storm waters, as the water will ultimately drain into Lake Scugog. Mr. Pugh says Rattleglen chose the Port Perry site due to the attractiveness of the area and the fact that there was a need for a mix of housing in the area. He says not everybody is looking for a large home, and not everybody was looking for a smaller fome, but were looking for a mix. Therefore, they are providing this mix. According to various council- lors the Township of Scugog is supportive of this project. Councillor Don Cochrane said the project has been in the works for quite some time, and the number of units involved in the latest proposal are the greatest they have ever been. Councillor Cochrane says the whole future of the develop- ment hinges on services, how- ever. Regional Councillor Yvonne Christie says the Township is behind this development asit is "a logical extension" of develop- ment. She says the areas in which the development is planned is "geographically logi- cal" as there is an arena across the street as well as S.A. Caw- ker School nearby. Downtown is also within walking distance. . However, there is a need for the land to be rezoned to full municipal services from the septic system. The subdivision is on a low piece of land, border- ing on Cawker's Creek, and therefore must avoid having the septic system draining into the creek. This is where the proposal could be stalled. Councillor Christie says the region has al- ways been slow in granting in- creased services, and "it could take months" before a decision is made. Without the services no future development can be approved, and therefore all growth is restricted. "We need sewer capacity. Without it we're going no place." Durham Region Police accept new contract Durham Regional Police ap- proved a one-year contract which will make them higher paid than that of their Peel Re- gion or Metropolitan Toronto counterparts. The officers voted 81 per cent in favor of the new contract. The one-year deal provides for a four per cent pay raise ret- roactive to January 1, 1991, as well as a further 2.3 per cent hike in July. The contract brings a first- class constable's salary to $50,020 per year. The salaries now range from approximately $35,000 for a fourth class con- stable to $62,000 for a staff ser- geant. The new contract also estab- lishes new salaries for senior constables. First-class consta- bles with more than 10 years of service get 102 per cent of the regular rate. Although the contract was accepted by the Police officers, the civilian police officers voted 84 per cent against their con- tract. ADVERTISING DEADLINES REAL ESTATE 5:00 P.M.
