"A Family Tradition for 125 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 30, 1991 - 13 Teen helps save man after he dove into shallow water By Gillian Barfoot When 20-year-old Mark Win- ter took a high dive off his boat into the water near Washburn Island last Saturday, Kim Pag- liaro was watching. Then she saw him floating face-down in the water, and at first she thought he was Joking. Then his friends Jumped into the water and rolled him over. He was gasping for breath. "As soon as they rolled him over, I knew what was happen- ing," Kim said. At the point where Mark dove into the water, the water is only knee-deep, she ex- plained. He dove right into a sandbar. His friends wanted to haul him into the boat and take him away, she said. Then her moth- er, Marg, yelled, "Don't touch him" as Kim and her father jumped over the side of the boat. Kim, 17, knows the dangers of diving into shallow water. She has taken three years of rescue and swimming courses at Uxbridge High School. She took charge and told ° Mark's friends to make sure he didn't move, Mrs. Pagliaro said proudly. Kim and her mother helped Mark's friends hold him still- while her father, Larry, found sum, vA. They were told that a house- boat was coming, but it wouldn't be there for an hour and a half. Meanwhile, an am- bulance was to meet them at Caesarea. "We were worried that he couldn't stay in the water that long," said Kim. She kept talk- ing to Mark, trying to keep his spirits up. "I tried to give him hope, to try and get through the pain. He had serious pain," she said. Mark kept yelling and swear- ing, she explained, because he was really worried that he was paralyzed. Mrs. Pagliaro pinched his feet, but he couldn't feel them. At one point, when it was quite wavy, he started to panic, saying, 'I can't hear. I must be deaf," said Kim. "But his ears were in the water, that's why he couldn't hear." Another time, when he start- ed into a string of profanities, someone teased him, 'If you keep that up, we'll push you back under,' said Mrs. Paglia- ro. Mr. Pagliaro and Const. Jim Harmer, who was vacationing on a boat nearby, borrowed a surfboard from another boat and brought it back to use as a stretcher for Mark. By the time he got onto the boat, Mark had some feeling in his hands again, but he still couldn't feel his feet, said Kim. After he had been taken away in the boat, Kim piloted Mark's boat back to his cot- tage. Afterward, when it was all over, she said she felt sick. But even though she was at the right place at the right time to help out, she insisted that anyone else would have done the same thing. "It was a co-operative effort,' stressed Kim. "Everybody worked together." Last week she called Sunny- brook Hospital in Toronto, where he was flown by helicop- ter, and found out that Mark has a fractured disc in his neck. "I hope that he gets better, hss he doesn't give up," she said. Bo - A Scugog resident Kim Pagllaro was one of the first to help an Injured man when he dove into shallow water last Saturday.
