For two weeks he has been finding giant worms or cater- pillars on his tomato plants. "I've already picked oft 50," he says. "And I only have 15 plants." The worms are about three inches long and half-an-inch thick. They are dark green with a sharp thorn at the rear, "and they bite," warns Mr. Balling. He picks them off his garden twice a day, dousing them in gas or dish detergeant to kill them. : Just recently, he discovered them eating the leaves on his potato plants. "I wanted to warn people about them," he says. "Last year there were a few, but not so many as this year." Mr. Balling advises farmers and gardeners to look for greenish-black droppings un- derneath their tomato and po- tato plants.
