In October of 1989, GM announced that it would consolidate production of full-size vans from Scarborough, Ontario and Lordstown, Ohio to Flint, Michigan. General Motors of Canada president and general manager George Peapples said "Inreview- ing the future product allocation plans, GM has determined that there is no new product program for the Scarborough Plant. We are advising our employees of the decision to close the plant in 1993 to provide them with the fullest opportunity for planning for their future." "Our need to balance excess assembly capacity more closely with market demand precludes the allocation of a future product to Scarborough," Peapples noted. '""We are now in the process of establishing worker adjustment committees in conjunction with the federal and provincial govern- ments to deal with issues related to this closure," he advised. The terms of the 1990 National Collective Agreement with the Canadian Auto Workers provide an October 15, 1990 seniority date at all other GM of Canada loca- tions for Scarborough employees on roll at the time of the agree- ment. This will facilitate place- ment opportunities at other loca- tions. The Agreement also pro- vides significant income maintenance provisions. The plant is already beginning to transition some salaried employees to other GM of Canada locations. Salariéd employees also are entitled to significant employment income security benefits. The Plant opened in 1952 as a Frigidaire Products of Canada facility, building appliances.
