"A Family Tradition for 125 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, August 7, 1991 - 13 Relaxing from 8,000 km. walk Em LE. ais From Page 1 jobs, and homes. Prior to commencing the Incredible Journey on March 20, 1991, Mr. McColm told the Star he trained for about one year, walking over 4,000 km. during the process. His trainer was an "amazing" 73-year-old man who had walked across Europe six times. "He taught me how to walk and breathe properly and pace myself for the trip," he said. His day starts every morning at 5:00 a.m. and depending on the weather he will walk up to 50 kilometers a day: If it's hot and humid, he will only walk about 30 km., but when the weather is cool, he strides on for another 10 or 20 kilometers. "The trip and the people have really been amazing," he said. While cross-Canada treks have been done before, Terry Fox and Steve Fonyo for canc- er, Mr. McColm proudly says there has never been one done for diabetes. He said that diabetes is the third major cause of death, behind cancer and heart dis- ease, and about one-quarter of The Port Perr Star 125 years "The Tradition Continues" all heart attack or stroke cases are related to diabetes. Reminiscing about parts of his trip, Mr. McColm told the Star about an incident which happened in Newfoundland where they were almost killed by two large Moose. The motorhome was coming down off a mountain in the evening, and there was about four inches of new snow on the road. He was asleep in the back with his seat belt fas- tened loosely around his waist when the incident occurred. "All of a sudden the driver hit the brakes and the motor- home slid over and hit the guard rails. By the time I woke up, my body had knocked the table off its moorings and the seat belt was up around my armpits," he said. The left front fender of the motorhome was ripped-off as it hit the guardrails and the vehi- cle finally came to rest with one side facing up and the oth- er side looking down at the tops of 120' trees. Getting out of the motor- home, they were faced by two huge Moose standing in the middle of the road about 50 feet away. "They stayed there for about five minutes before being scared away," he said. Mr. McColm's short holiday ended Tuesday morning, when he was taken to Toronto for a medical check-up and tests. If everything checks-out, he was to be returned to Harwood Ave. in Ajax, where he finished walking Friday night, to con- tinue his trip into metro Toronto. While in the Toronto area, he will be the subject of a number of receptions, and Wednesday morning was a guest on City TV's Breakfast show. Mr. McColm's affection for Port Perry and its residents is very evident when he speaks of the area, but said he was still surprised by some of the local businesses who have been so kind to him. He cited the owner of Mr. Sub who provided them with lunch on Saturday, and made a $50 donation towards diabetes research. At Circular Sound, the owner gave him four tapes for listening along his long route across the country. Mr. McColm was emotional when he spoke of returning to the highway on Tuesday morn- ing after spending a relaxing and enjoyable weekend with his good friend Dave Mann. "It's the first time since the beginning of the walk, that I'm really going to feel lonely about heading back out on the road," he said. But Dave Mann added some comfort to the parting saying they would be in touch by phone a couple of times eac week. D. J.
