Great pop fly catches from Philp Pontiac squeaks by Seagrave team 9-8 Philp Pontiac finished the regular season off with a marginal win over Seagrave 9-8. Philp was down five runs in the second inning with Seagrave's Chad Yackeley catching three From Corner Five by John "Wally' Nesbitt Remember the fun you used to have pulling allnighters in high school? Ya wanna try it again this weekend? Well, come on out to Mosport and be part of Canada's only "twice by the clock" event, the Toronto Star 24 Hour Escort World Chal- enge. If this sounds like a real party for race fans, you had better believe that it is. And if it sounds like a gruelling marathon battle between men and racing machinery, you're right again. The cars in the Escort series are basically showroom stock with a few modifications made for safety reasons and feature makes ranging from Honda Civics to Nissans to the mighty Chevy Corvettes. For the Mosport event, the 25 or so regular Escort competitors will be joined on the track by up to 38 cars from the Canadian Firestone Firehawk series. When you combine the sheer number of cars racing with the vast speed differences of the various models, take into consideration the duration of the event and then figure in the Murphy's Law factor, you can understand why this will not be an easy race to win or even finish. One man that is determined to do both is Blackstock's John Powell. Returning to Mosport as the reigning Escort Endurance champion, Powell would like nothing better than to claim victory on this, his home track, an accomplishment which has thus far eluded him. To this end, he has prepared two of the Esso/Sony Corvettes for battle with a third car waiting in the wings and has sent out a call for the best hired guns availa- ble from the Canadian racing ranks. Already blessed with a driving team consisting of R.K. Smith {the defending driving champion}, Peter Lock- hart, Ken Wallace and Peter Cunningham, Powell has added to his pay- roll for the weekend Richard Spenard, David Empringham, Doug Beatty, Ken Wilden and Tom Clark from the Players Ltd./GM series as well as Paul Mackie from Whitby. "I wanted drivers that were familiar with the track and who knew the local competition. This is a race of attrition so I needed racers who could exercise some self control and discipline, stay out of trouble and bring the car back, more or less, in one piece." While he is painfully aware of the nuances and nuisances of endu- rance racing, the biggest problem that Powell foresees will be with the less experienced teams. "Our boys will have to keep their eyes open out there. There will be a lot of drivers who haven't raced against cars going 40 or 50 or 60 miles an hour faster than they are and may not see us coming. And face it, some teams just can't afford to prepare a car as well as they should for a 24 hour race. If they lose an engine or a differential, the track could get oily and very messy in a hurry." As far as the competition goes, the biggest challenge to the Powell team will come from the Morrison Mobil 1 and the Bakeracing Corvettes, both teams having previously won at Mosport. But a defiant John Powell says, "We have a good car, we have good drivers, all we need is a little luck and it'll be our turn!" John couldn't definately state what his race strategy would be, "There's just too many variables," but somehow I think a part of it will in- clude a champagne shower on the victory podium at race end. Just a couple of quick notes: Last year's race covered a total of 2028 miles or approximately the distance between Toronto and Miami. With a Kinder and Gentler Mother Nature, this race record should easily be shattered. Bet high, young man, bet high! Also keep an eye out for a rumoured all female team. Kathryn Teas- dale, a Bakeracing driver, will share the wheel with Mary McCullough, Tenna Larsen, the 17 year old Ajax resident, and Terry MacDonald, Randy's little sister and part-time CART/PPG pace car driver. Twenty-four hours huh? Where can I get some No-Doz? pop flies to retire Philp in the se- cond. The third inning had Seagrave's Mat Sanchez making a double play and Joel Thomson hitting a solo home run. Then Philp Pontiac came alive in the fourth with three home runs hit by Kameron Sean and Nicholas with J.J. hitting a triple to tie the game. In the fifth two more runs were racked up by Philp with a triple from Jordan and doubles hit by Braden, Daniell, and Nicholas. This was a fine game of baseball played by both teams and will guarantee some good ac- tion in the play-offs. William Michel, Gord Bentley, Dustin Marnoch, Mike Leeming, Scott Swain, Ryan Larmer - the last pop catch kept the game at a tie in the bottom of the seventh for the third out. Good effort from Brenda Tromans, Kingsley Malcolm and Ryan Copithorn. Good pitching by Luke Martyn, Leanne Goslin and Ryan Copithorn. Also good catching by Kyle Simms, William Michel and Dustin Marnoch. Blackstock Lions - Farms 4. Blackstock Lions Tony Waldriff had a double and Josh Wilson had a triple. Great plays from Josh Wilson at short stop tagged se- cond base and made the throw to Maltheb first base for a double play. Josh Wilson also made a great line drive catch. Peter Bostelman good pop fly catch at first base. Andy Avis good pap fly catch. The whole team have made a great improvement from the first of the season and both coaches have en- joyed working with them this season. Now lets show them in the tournament on August 17. For Maltheb Farms Carl Davis, Rob Shaw, Erin Hassal, Johnathan McCourt and Kevin Gilbank had singles. Scott Goble tripled and Brent Donnelly had a pair of singles. Scott Nesbitt and Brent Donnelly both made good catches and Scott Goble pitched very well. GUARANTEED INVESTMENT CERTIFICATES .
