"A Family Tradition for 125 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 20, 1991 - 11 Travels 5,000 km across country by bike By Gillian Barfoot Ron Sorenson's dream be- came reality this summer. He took the trip he always dreamed of, travelling out to British Columbia and arriving back home to Oakwood, just outside Lindsay, on Aug. 12. The trip out only took four- , 3 i] hah. Ron Sorenson has just and-a half hours, but the trip back took 34 days. "I cycled 4,960 kilometres," he says proudly. "I saw the country in a way that most people will never see it." He and a friend, Mark Blanchfield from Oshawa, flew out to Vancouver on July 4. On July 8 they dipped their back wheels in the Pacific Ocean near Richmond, B.C., and then were off. Each day they rode an aver- age of 150 kilometres, usually starting at 6:30 a.m. and reach- ing the next campsite in the middle of the afternoon. They loved the Rockies, where they visited all the hot springs and went hiking on a glacier. "Lake Louise was excelldnt," says Mr. Sorenson. In both Banff and Jasper they met hundreds of wo touring bicyclists, many from other countries. They took their time and snapped 12 rolls ANE Th Wy arrived home from his 4,960-km bi cycle trip from the west coast. "The mountain passes were hard," he admits, adding it took three-and-a-half hours to pedal up, and just one hour to coast down at speeds up to 80 km-h. But the Prairies were the - hardest, due to strong head- winds they had to fight from Calgary to Winnipeg. But then the wind changed, and with it behind them one afternoon, they travelled 150 kilometres in three hours. They saw a lot of wildlife on the Prairies, including goats, elk, bears and wolves, and one area was so dry that there was cactus lining the side of the (Classic 8 Aluminum Ltd. "And Saskatchewan is not flat!" he stresses, describing the long, rolling hills that cov- er the province. The mosquitoes were bad in Manitoba, attacking them con- stantly. "Manitoba has the biggest mosquitoes you've ever seen," he exclaims. "But Ontario has the worst drivers." "People weren't in a great big hurry out west," he ex- plains. "But in Ontario, it seemed as if they were always rushing to get home." Mr. Sorenson especially loved the country on the north side of Lake Superior. "It's as beautiful as the Rock- ies," he says. "I can't wait to go back there." He crashed only once during the trip and got a bad cut on his knee. The impact broke a spoke on his back wheel and they had to straighten it before they could continue. "I'm glad I was wearing a helmet," he says. "Everyone should wear one." He explains that 95 per cent of the cyclists they met in west- ern Canada were wearing safe- ty helmets. They only took three days off during the ride and he admits they tried to ride faster across the prairies because they were starting to get homesick. Every other day he phoned his wife and four kids. "I wish Now he's looking forward to his next trip, east, "to see the rest of Canada." Bicycle touring is the best way to see the country, he says. "Besides, it's such good exer- cise and it's healthy." "Just get out and ride." ADVERTISING DEADLINES my family was with us," he REAL ESTATE e's ateful that his em- 5:00 P.M.
