"A Family Tradition for 125 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 20, 1991 - 27 " Pee Wees Greenbank Bakery advanced to the third round of the Pee Wee and Bantam Boys playoffs by defeating a spirited Pineridge team 21-5. The red hot Greenbank hitters exploded for eleven runs in the final inning to seal the victory. The Greenbank attack was led by Joe Timms with a tape measure home run and three RBIs; by Trevor MacSween with a bases- loaded triple; by Jaime Donnelly with three timely hits resulting in two RBIs; by Tim Irwin with three singles and two runs scored; and by Chris Sanchez with an exciting two-run double cheered on by his four brothers and two sisters. The Pineridge offense was sparked by Andrew Jacobson with two hits, one run scored and one RBI. On defense, Darryl Holtby's play at first base and short stop and Mark Dunn's fan- cy fielding at third base stood out in a losing effort. As part of the activities, several members of the club dressed up as Canada's Premiers and Prime Minister. After two eight-end games were played, the members went into the clubhouse for a lovely meal followed by a very humorous line-up of entertainment. Pictured in the photo are (front row, from left) Prince Edward Island Premier Joe Ghiz (Stan Foster), Nova Scotia Premier Donald Cameron (Gord Pren- tice), Ontario Premier Bob Rae (Doug Gower), British Colum- bla Premier Rita Johnston (Pal Marshall), Saskatchewan Pre- mier Grant Devine (John Legere), back row, Newfoundland Premier Clyde Wells (Bud Heard), New Brunswick Premier Frank McKenna (Cam Crawford), Quebec Premier Robert Bourassa (Jack Owen), Prime Minister Brian Mulroney (Chuck Bathie), Manitoba Premier Gary Filmon (Harry Dunn), and Alberta Premier Don Getty (Jim Baird). Taylor Ford Mites capture silver medal in championship On August 11, our team travell- ed to Kleinburg for the champion- ship round of the York-Durham League. Our team ended up as the silver medalists after being unable to upset the winning Bramalea squad in the champion- ship game. Our players started off a demanding four game day by easily handling Vaughan in a 15-7 victory. Jeff Ashton and Ryan McQuade each had two hits with Justin Heyworth battling for three walks. Reid McTaggart had a bunt single and scored two runs. Chris Jones recorded the pitching win on no hits and six strikeouts with Justin Heyworth getting the save and allowing only one hit. In our first of two appearances against Bramalea the Bramalea team recorded a 7-2 win on the strength of their nice one-hit pit- ching. Our lone hit was a two-run homer by Ryan McQuade. This brought us close at 3-2, however; we weren't able to hold them down beyond that. Our third game was a very ex- citing matchup against a very charged-up Stouffville team in the semi-final game. The score was deadlocked at 1-1 into the fifth in- ning as our Port team wasn't able to come up with the key hit despite many runners in scoring position. The "Big Bang' finally came off the bat of Michael Versage in the form of a three run homer to give us a 5-1 lead. The "never-say- die" Stouffville team scored three more late runs but weren't able to tie it up as we chalked up a 5-4 victory. Catcher Jeff Ashton made some great throws to help out and Scottt Cunningham, Darryl Dalton and Mark Richardson all contributed defensively. Chris Jones record- ed the complete game win on 14 strikeouts while giving up five hits. The championship game was tightly contested earlier on as we had the score tied 2-2 in the third inning thanks to a two run homer by Ryan McQuade after Jeff's single. Chris ran out of gas final- ly at about this time as there was only a 15 minute break after finishing the Stouffville game. The strong hitting Bramalea team went on to bang up our tired bullpen as well to take a well earned championship victory. As usual, our ever smiling Justin Biggelstone batted well at the plate and in the outfield. Aaron Chambers played well in the outfield and at first base. Michael MacLennan made a tremendous effort for a neal -miss long running outfield catch to highlight a team effort by our Taylor Ford Mites that all the parents and our town can be pro- ud of. . Busy season in Squirt soccer Last Tuesday saw some more good squirt soccer match-ups. Raglan Welding shut out Scugog Lumber by a score of 3-0. Raglan showed an excellent of- fensive effort by all. Clayton Gilmore stood out as a playmaker, who also scored one goal. Two goals were scored by Katie Bierness and Stacey Cunn- ingham had an excellent running game. Both Kevin Lukas and Vanessa Koepke played well and kept the pressure on for Scugog Lumber. City Capital dominated Rotary Club and won their game 6-1. Trevor Lance had an excellent Everlasting Beauty Fountains ® Bird baths ® Figures ® Planters #57 to Durham Road 20, go East 5 km, turn North onto Long Sault Road, first place on left. Blair & Marilyn Van Eyk R.R. #5, Bowmanville game, scoring four goals. Ashley Wray got the lone marker for the Rotary Club. Port Perry's Team E defeated Manvers Team 2, 4-1. David Halward scored two goals with Spencer Churchill and Matthew Smart each getting one. Honorable mention goes to Chris Wygerde for his strong effort. Manvers Team 1 pounded Port Perry Team H and won by a score of 9-0. Terry Petronio had a four goal effort, and Ashley Noten- boom, Phillip Lake and Chase Charland each marked one. Jamie Cameroon finished the scoring with his second goal after a perfect corner kick by Jonathan Gilbank. Team H's coaching staff plans to work on their defense for next game. Honorable mention goes to Tony Boomsma for his good offen- sive effort.
