"A Family Tradition for 125 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 20, 1991-3 Chuck Hill challenges |i in Ward 4 By Scott Anderson After much consideration, a longtime Scugog Township res- ident has decided it's time to run for local politics. Chuck Hill informed the Port Perry Star last week of his in- tention to run for the position of Ward 4 councillor in the fall election. Although this is Mr. Hill's first attempt at local politics, he is not new to the goings-on of lo- cal council. He has attended council on a number of occa- sions as both an interested citi- zen, and also to support an in- terest in which he isinvolved. The need for a councillor to stay informed of all issues is a top priority, said Mr. Hill. Al- though he is generally pleased with the way the present coun- cil has handled the affairs of Scugog, he said a better flow of information is needed to avoid things "slipping through the cracks." Mr. Hill said this type of lax- ness happens particularly on smaller committees, and he is not blaming anybody for this. But he does believe a general tightening of the rules could help the situation. "I'm not saying I'm going to change things," he said. "What } am saying is that I'll do my st." Commuter bus service From Page 1 saying they (the provincial gov- ernment) "can't spend that kind of money on that kind of service." Mayor Hall attended an As- sociation of Municipalities of Ontario conference in Toronto on Monday and Tuesday and was talking to other mayors from the area about the service. In a telephone interview from the convention on Mon- day, Mayor Hall told the Port Perry Star that he believes many people would use a train service as opposed to the bus service. He said he hopes the government will reconsider the train service, and hopes GO Transit will take over the ser- vice. In Durham Region only the Township of Scugog and Brock are without some sort of GO train or bus service. CHUCK HILL Part of the cause of the cur- rent situation is that the coun- cil is too familar with each oth- er, but he doesn't see this as an issue following the election. He points to the fact that only 50 per cent of the present council will be back after the election. He said the new personalities will make a difference, which will provide the township with new ideas. "I think the main thing for the new faces is to look forward and not get tied up in the rheto- ric," he said. "We can't ignore the past, but there's a lot of good moves that should be con- tinued." One thing he would like to see is more attention on attract- ing industry and tourism to the area. He believes both go "hand in hand", and would push for a more concentrated effort in get- ting business into Scugog. "I'd like to see the area devel- oped gradually with a financial- ly sound base." He isn't necessarily calling for new development in the area, citing that there are some vacant buildings which could The Port Perry Star Complete coverage of all your Community events. Mr. Hill, who has lived in the area for 40 years, and is cur- rently a resident of Scugog Point in Nestleton, knows the im act of a landfill site all too well. After reviewing Interim Waste Management's site selection document, he doesn't believe Scugog is exempt. "I don't think it's time to re- lax."
