The guest speaker was Mrs. Ann Wannenkhof. She gave the history of "The Food Bank' and told of the need for this service, how the need has increas- ed this past year and of the help they receive from the churches, service clubs and organizations like the W.I. They really do a tremendous work at Christmas time with "Operation Scugog" providing the Christmas Dinner Boxes for the unfortunate people who need our help. We motored to St. Jacobs and toured the in- teresting shops and buildings. Lunch was enjoyed at "Marion's County Cupboard'. A lady acted as guide as we toured the Men- nonite countryside. We visited the farm of Mr. and Mrs. Brubaker near Elmira. They have eight girls and two boys. They have cows, pigs, calves, thousands of Rhode Island Red Chicks, huge vegetable . garden with beautiful flowers growing along with vegetables and not one weed. With the or- chard they are really self- sufficient. She explained the Men- nonite way of living. Their way of life and belief is 'Brotherhood, Love and Discipline". They have their own schools and the children walk to school. The homes have additions built on again and again as the families grow. One addition is called the "Dotty" house. Here the parents retire when the children take on the responsibili- ty of farming. No one goes to a nursing home in Mennonite coun- try. Also, there is no crime! We also saw the home of George Diefenbaker, the grandfather of Prime Minister George Diefen- baker. He made wagon hitches in the late 1800s. We also saw two four-horse teams doing their ear- ly plowing. We visited the "Rural Carriage Supply' near Elmira. Here we *saw how the Mennonite buggies are made; saw the wheels assembled in the original hand- made style. Cutters are also made here. All by hand. From there we travelled to the '"'Montrose covered bridge in West Montrose, nicknamed the "Kissing Bridge"'. It was a safe trip and an in- teresting discovery of these special people, the "Mennonites". md to advertise and boost our own Port Perry Fair. This is the weekend we have been preparing for. Ladies of the W.I. don't forget your homemade cookies! Also, everyone is invited to visit us in the Christie building at the Women's Institute display.
