------ -- 32 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 27, 1991 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Minis finish off reqular season The last sets of regular season games were held on Tuesday and Wednesday of last week. Darlene Colton Photography just edged out Fowler, Davies by a score of 2-1. Kara Olsen got the first goal for Fowler, Davies assisted by John Dutka. Kellen Jackson and Jesse Hodgens also hustled well throughout. But Fowler, Davies was not able to hang on to the lead, as Jessica Houthuys came through with two unassisted goals to put her team ahead. Adam Johansen provided good net minding to preserve the win. Big V shut out Taylor Home Fuels, 2-0. Eric Hertzberg and Alex McKay each scored one goal, and Andrew Fancy played a strong game on defense. Ridge North Realty was also successful against Bruton's IDA, with a 1-0 effort, thanks to a goal from Chad Wansborough. The Lions Club and Sportsland played to an exciting 2-2 tie. Kevin Robins opened the scoring and got the last goal to tie the game for the Lions Club. Kyle Steele pro- vided good goal tending and Scott Martin made some excellent passing plays. Tim Donohue had a nice shot on goal, but Christopher Sutherland made the stop for Sportsland. Sportsland's goals were by Erin Edwards on a pass from Tyson * Prescott, and Matthew Sutherland on a rebound shot. Melissa Nagy also had an exciting scoring chance, on a breakaway. Re: Cup Day Saturday, Aug. 24 The season wrapped up on Saturday with 'Cup Day" games and presentations. Each team played two final games and all the children put in a fine effort. All of the children involved improved over the course of the season, and in recognition of their participa- tion, each was provided with a plaque and a team picture. The soccer club thanks coaches and parents for their assistance, and hopes to see everyone out again next year. Also, thanks to our generous mini sponsors: IGA, 'Lions Club, Bruton's IDA, Fowler, Davies law office, Williams' Arms, Sportsland, Ridge North Realty, Big V Drug Store, Darlene Colton Photography and Taylor Home Fuels. i 3 Free Pickup & Delivery Free estimates COUNTRY UPHOLSTERY DONNA ANDERSON 705-328-1156 =X we! A number of teams competed in the day's events which promoted sportsmanship over winning or losing. It appears from the looks on the faces of the young 'players that all had fun. Under 16 girls soccer team comes up short The U-16 girls team seems to be coming up short on both games and players. On Thursday, Aug. 8 they travelled to Whitby to strut their stuff, but Port was one player off having a full team on the field, while the opposition had a squad of substitutes on the sidelines. McCrae was goal tending for the first time in two years (due to the absence of Coyne) but proved that she still has the goal tending stutt! The first half was tiresome for Homestead Furniture, but they managed to hold off the powerful Whitby forwards until the next half. Excellent defensive play by Liz Wordley as she was constant- ly booting the ball from our end. The forward line of Cornish, Buscher, Kearns, and Phipps managed to push the ball into Whity's end many times, but fail- ed to push it into the net. Whitby - took a 1-0 lead by placing it into the corner of McCrae's net. The players then began to drop like flies. Two Whitby girls were taken off the field and our own Alicia Bentley took to the ground in pain, therefore leaving us two players short. Whitby scored another by a penalty lack, leaving the score at 2-0. Port played a hard-fought, tough game. The following Thursday, Port drove to Bowmanville for a tiresome game in the rain. Again, we had only 10 players (including the goalie) on the field. With Bowmanville's strong forwards and defence, Port came up short four goals. Thursday, Aug. 22, the second Whitby team was hosted by Scugog. For the first time in Qver a month, Port had more than our many fans and coaches on the sidelines! (We had one substitute). The game began slowly, with both Port and Whitby lacking con- trol. Scugog then began to show their stuff by passing right past Whitby and through Whitby. Reed took control of the mid-field by stealing the ball from Whitby, and plowing it ® the wings. The forward line of Cornish, Buscher, r-- Phipps and Bentley kept a strong offensive game going throughout, beginn- ing with a blast from Cornish. Minutes later, a throw in from Brown went to Buscher's head, which in turn set up Kylie for her pass to Cornish who again belted the ball to the net and through the goalie's open arms. Whitby returned Port's goal in the second half off a corner kick. Excellent footwork was done by Mari as she brought the ball up the field. Port's forwards kept shooting but nothing would go in. Finally a handball by Whitby allowed a penalty shot. Cornish took it and scored for her hat trick. Congrats! The final score ended with Port leading 3-1. A group of ladies from the Wednesday morning ladies league enjoyed a luncheon at the home of convenor Joyce Edwards last week. Sitting out on the patio, enjoying the warm weather, food and refreshments, they began to reminisce of previous 'tennis lun- cheons' and excursions of the past involving three of our finest. While on the, subject of this group of ladies, they're having a Doubles Tournament commenc- ing on Wednesday, Sept. 18, with the finals being played the next week followed by another lun- cheon...and more reminiscing. The final fun tournament is slated for Saturday, October 5, followed by our annual wind-up dance -- "The Tennis Ball," be- ing held at Skyloft Ski and Coun- try Club. On the lighter side of tennis, spectators are those noisy and boorish tennis observers who are always around, except when you need someone to witness your fine straight aces or your opponent's foot faults. See you on the courts! Please recycle this newspaper
