At about 1:40 a.m. the Oshawa Fire Department was called to a fire at Albert Street United Church which is at the corner of Albert and Olive Streets. On their arrival they found the west annex totally engulfed in flames. Eventually the fire was ex- tinguished but the west annex was destroyed. Damage is estimated at about $750,000. . Police and fire investigators believe that the fire was deliberately set. Entry was gain- ed into the church through a south west ground floor window. Once inside suspects removed some cash from the minister's office and then set the building on fire. Four persons, believed to be males, were seen running on the railway tracks as the fire trucks arrived. One male is described as white, 5' 10", 18-21 years old, skin- ny, long brown hair to the middle of his back, scruffy beard, wear- ing white shorts, dark tank top and carrying something. Police are asking anyone with any information regarding this fire to call Crime Stoppers. You'll never have to give your name or appear in court.
