According to figures from the township, a total of 28 building permits were issued in July, down from 46 a year earlier. The total value of the per- mits were down considerably as well. The value of the per- mits issued in July was $559,460, compared to $2,080,360 for the same month in 1990. The number and value of permits issued for single famil dwellings was the area which saw the most dramatic de- crease. In July 1991, two per- mits were issued valued at $244,660. This is a sharp con- trast from the nine permits is- sued in July 1990 with a value of $1,375,860. Single family additions and alterations were disappointing as well. Only five permits worth $54,200 were issued last month, compared to 14 permits valued at $340,925 in July of last year. Although the value of the. permits were down in all but - two of the remaining catego- ries, the number of permits is- sued remained fairly constant. The year-to-date figures for building permits also contin- ued to be disappointing as both the value of the permits, as well as the number were down substantially. The total value of permits for the year-to-date ending July 31 were down 33 per cent to 159, as compared to 1990's figure of 211. The total value of the per- mits were down more than 25 per cent to $9,105,915 com- pared to $12,788,465. Leading the way to the biggest drop was single family dwellings. Year-to-date figures show a decrease of more than 50 per cent to 26 from 55 the previous year, while its value dropped to $5,651,600, as com- pared to $8,434,465 year-to- date in 1990. Only one commercial permit valued at $200,000 has been is- sued to date, as compared to four valued at $697,750 last year. The building permit num- bers are compiled monthly by the Township of Scugog's Building Department. Township seeks extension of cost-sharing PRIDE Program The Township of Scugog is considering an amendment to an improvement plan that will see the redevelopment and im- provement of the downtown area. The township is seeking to amend the Water Street - Lake Scugog Waterfront Communi- ty Plan, drafted in May 1990, to improve the waterfront area. The plan applies to the area which is generally bound- ed by Scugog Street, Simcoe Street and the Lake Scugog Waterfront, as well as other ar- eas throughout the communi- ty. A public meeting has been called for Sept. 23 to debate the issue. Firemen to compete with "jaws of life" Spectators will be able to get a close look at how rescue tools, known as "The Jaws of Life" are used at the Extrication Compe- tition to be held in Port Perry on Sept. 7. The competition, which is be- ing hosted by Scugog Fire De- partment Hall #1, will begin at 8:30 a.m. and run until 4 p.m. on the parking lot on Water Street, better known as the old arena pad. The rescue teams from sever- al fire departments across Dur- ham Region will compete in two scenarios, one using hydraulic tools, and the other hand tools. Representatives from the Fire Marshal's office will be judging the competition. There will be a $1 admission fee to watch the competition. Bleachers will be set up for spectators. A complete list of the partici- pating rescue teams will be list- ed in next week's paper. Earl Cuddie, Township of Scugog clerk, says the Town- ship is seeking this amend- ment in order to extend its in- volvement in the PRIDE Program, which it has been utilizing for the past three years. Under PRIDE, a community is given a grant by the Ontario government to improve a speci- fied area. The participating community is then required to match the amount provided by the government. Port Perry has already seen an injection of capital into the area in the last three years of approximately $750,000 and signs of improvement are be- ginning to show. The money has mainly concentrated on the Water Street area which has seen improvements such as better street lighting, curb- ing, sewers and roads, as well as improved park access. Mr. Cuddie says the next phase of the program should be Water Street, north of Queen Street. He added they intend to stay involved in the PRIDE Program concentrating on "a block a year." 'The program can be utilized in other areas of the township as well, and does not have to concentrate on just downtown improvement plans. Mr. Cud- die said he wouldn't be sur- prised if other parts of Scugog take advantage of the program as well in the future. Mayor Howard Hall is very supportive of the PRIDE Pro- gram, and points to the signifi- cant contribution it has made to the improvement of Water Street. The mayor is also hoping the business community takes an interest in the public meeting and the program in order for it to continue. He says the pro- gram is an excellent way to get the improvements done. "I would hate to see this pro- ject stopped," he said.
