Trem "A Failty raion for 125 Vedrs™ > = 7 Letters to the editor Blind people able to participate in all sports To the Editor: As a blind person myself and a former resident of Port Perry, I was very interested to read about Incredible Journey's Ken McColm and his recent visit to the Scugog area, as featured in the Star. I wish him every success with his efforts to raise public awareness about diabetes. 1 nos rather concerned, though, about the paragraph in the story about Ken which began, "While unable to water-ski now, due to his blindness..."" Apparently, Mr. McColm lost his sight only a few years ago and he may not yet have had the opportunity to discover that, along with many other active blind people, he too could continue to enjoy this and other sports. It would be unfortunate if your readers were to gain the impres- sion that blind people do not par- ticipate in sports activities. We certainly do! In addition to in- tegrated activities in local com- munity facilities, blind people also have a national blind spor- ting organization. Swimming, skating, hockey, wrestling, skiing and rock climbing are just a few of the activities enjoyed by many blind people. I myself have been an ice skater and a roller skater for many years and I am enroll- ing in a fencing class this fall. I enjoyed the Star's coverage of Ken McColm's Journey and was pleased to see as well that he has a job waiting for him afterward. Blind people are beginning to take a more active role in society and in doing so we are destroying old myths about blindness. Day by day, we are changing what it means to be blind. Yours very truly, Sean J. Madsen, Chairperson, Democracy and Blindness Committee, Blind of Ontario Organized with Self-help Tactics (BOOST) Jobs are more important than "a little bit of noise" To the Editor: I would like to address this letter to the residents of Heath Cres. on their complaint about the noise at Mother Jackson's. Obviously these people have not thought about what they are actually saying. Mother Jackson's has been in this community longer than Heath Cres., doing the great job that they do. The number of jobs this factory gives the people of this community alone should be considered before such stu- pidity as a little bit of noise. A factory of this size must have a considerable amount of noise to continue to operate as well as this one has. Since Johnson Controls closed down a little while back, there was a number of jobs lost and noth- ing could be done about it. Thanks to Mother Jackson's this town is not doomed yet. I think the people of Heath Cres. should leave their hear- ing problem alone and open their eyes instead, before they put their own community jobless.
