Blackstock W.I. presents scholarship Port Perry Fair enjoyed per- fect fair weather over the week- end with a great fair which at- tracted many from this area as from across Central Ontario. With Blackstock and Port Perry Fairs over as well as the C.N.E. and the return of the school children we must admit that the summer is almost over and our beautiful autumn is fast approaching. Harold and Lois Luke along with other members of the Luke family enjoyed a weekend on Aug. 24 at North Bay where they attended the wedding of Harold's nephew Robbie Luke and Katherine Blair in a beau- tiful military wedding at the Air Force base. Upon their re- turn Harold and Lois travelled to Ottawa where they learned they were grandparents to baby girl, daughter of their daughter Kathy and Mike Mor- ris. Congratulations and best wishes to Thelma and Lloyd Wright who celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary with two family gatherings, one with their own family, the other with brothers and sisters. Heartiest congratulations. Don and Marjorie Green have returned home from a great vacation to Ireland with their son Robert and daughter- in-law Sue when they visited Sue's grandparents and other relatives. An excellent crowd attended the annual Ross Stevenson bar- becue held last Wednesday at the Blackstock Fairgrounds. Michael Cadwalader of Penn- sylvania visited Jim, Barb, Jeff, Julie and Jennifer Byers for eight days as a guest of Jen's Jen and Michael had met through Girl Guides and have maintained their friendship. There were ten tables at the Tuesday evening weekly eu- chre party with the following winners: Bernice Wells, Elsie Pogue, Muriel Butson, Verna Robinson, Gladys Potts, Ber- nice Loudfoot with Dorothy Ed- wards, low. Nancy Belyea of Toronto spent the weekend with her cousin Joan and Harvey Gra- ham and visited other relatives inthe area. The Blackstock Women's In- stitute met on Wednesday, Aug. 28 at the Blackstock Unit- ed Church. President Eileen McLaugh- lin welcomed everyone present and opened the meeting with the Institute Ode and the Mary Stewart Collect. Laura *'lalli"' Blodgett was born in Port Au Prince, Haiti and grew up living on the islands of Curacao and Bonaire for the first 17 years of her life. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Tufts University in Boston in 1979 with degrees in Economics and Spanish Literature. During the next 10 years Laura worked with various financial institutions including Bankers Trust (New York), Bank of America (Los Angeles), and NCNB Texas National Bank (Dallas) in their respective Inter- national Private Banking Division. Laura's artistic career began at the end of 1989 when she decided to give paintings as Christmas presents. Encouraged by friends and family to pursue her artwork, she set up a studio in her home in Toronto, and began painting full- time. B52 | thesda-Reach W.1. a member of the Board of Directors of Subdi- vision 7 was in attendance and made a special presentation of Adelaide Hoodless Scholarship to Julie Byers. Julie has com- pleted 28 4-H courses. Congrat- ulations Julie. Two other ladies accompanied Mrs. Croxall. Muriel Hoskin introduced Karen of Big V Pharmacy, Port Perry who spoke on over the counter drugs. A question and answer period followed Karen's informative talk. Motto was: A faithful friend is the medicine of life. Role Call: How I like to relax. Several items of business were dealt with in the business peri- od. Blackstock W.I. received an invitation to Hampton W.L.'s Fun Fair. Lunch and a social time concluded this special meeting. Sorry that Mrs. Audrey Ja- mieson suffered an accident and is currently in Port Perry Hospital. Her many local friends will be happy to know that after several weeks in hos- pital and a time with her daughter Janet. Andrea Weir has now recovered sufficiently from her broken leg to be home again. Laura has exhibited her work at many good shows in Toronto in- cluding The Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition, 'Arts at the Heart' - Mel Lastman Square, Simpsons Downtown Store, and The One of a Kind to name-a few. Her paintings are based on per- sonal experiences; her childhood in the Carribbean, her extensive travels with her parents, her Mother's passion for the exotic and unusual, her husband's great sense of humor, and her two sons as well as their dog and cat. Laura is also a collector of folk art and is fluent in six languages including English, Spanish, Dutch, French, Italian and Papiamento. Laura will be present at the library from 1:30 - 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 7 and we in- vite you to come and see her delightful work and welcome her to Port Perry following her flight from Vancouver. Parkes, Colourful Pottery by Catherine Carroll, Primarily Wooden Sculptures by Ralph Price, Silks and Sculptures by Jeanette and Howard Shanks, and Sculpture by Tyler Briley.
