Bernice and her sister Blanche Scouting group committee plans leadership training course The 1st Port Perry Scouting Group Committee met on Aug. 14 to prepare for the upcoming year. Leaders, executive and parents attended the meeting to plan the registration date, fee and process. Again this year we will have to get more new leaders if we wish to take any new registration. Although almost all of last years leaders are returning so are most of our boys and their brothers. Last year with the help and dedication of some new leaders, the use of the Kinsmen Hall, we were able to start a second Beaver Colony but this still left boys on a waiting list. It was em- phasized that the only way to keep the quality and fun in the pro- gram was to have sufficient train- ed leaders. To increase the number of boys without a proportionate increase in leaders and space was only jeopordizing the program for all boys. The leaders in all sections were congratulated for taking their training courses and providing their section with a fun year. Verna Laurin, secretary of the Canadian Iris Society was the guest speaker at the Brooklin Horticultural meeting last Wednesday evening. We enjoyed Verna's slide presentation as well as her most interesting and infor- mative talk on growing iris. Some iris rhyzomes were available for members to buy or exchange. The number of entries on the show table were down con- siderably. Many classes with no entries. However, there were some fine entries of flowers and vegetables. Eleanor McCallum took the special award for the best decorative - a design using only herbs called "Savour the Flavor." Norma Ingleton took a first prize in one of the decorative classes. The next meeting will be Sept. 25 which will be the chrysan- themum and vegetable show. The Eieanor Knight W.M.S. will meet at the home of Muriel Fisher on Wednesday evening. Next Sunday will be the open air church service, at Grant and Sheila Parrott's home on the Townline Road. Everyone, please bring lunch, cutlery and your own lawn chairs. Beverage will be supplied. Everyone is invited to join with us. Church school resumes at 10 a.m. - classes for all ages. Setting the Pace With the help of many in- dividuals, events taking place and an impressive response to the mail campaign, the 'Setting the Pace" Campaign has reached $18.3 million. The $18.3 million total includes several substantial gifts that will be announced with the next few weeks. As the campaign moves along, the mail campaign continues in both Oshawa and the Durham Region and individuals continue to find unique ways to contribute to the campaign. On Sept. 7, the Hospital Aux- iliary will be holding a Furkin Day. Two hundred hospital volunteers will be hitting the streets of Oshawa selling Furkins in support of Oshawa General's building fund. If you see a volunteer, please support the Auxiliary's fundraising efforts by buying a Furkin. Larry Emmerson was especial- ly congratulated for completion of his part two training course as a Scout Leader. The group was shown pictures and samples of the new Scout uniform consisting of tan shirt, blue beret and sash signifying the different sections. The committee decided again this year to encourage and pay for leader training and uniform. Training courses are available throughout the year at Camp Samac and again this year the Pine Ridge District will host an introduction training course for leaders of Beavers, Cubs and Scouts called Nuts & Bolts, Sept. 29 at the Church of the Ascension. Registration for boys returning from last year will be held Sept. 7 - 1-3 p.m. at the Church of the Ascension. The registration for new boys will be announced in the paper at a later date. The registration fee will be $40 per child with a reduced rate for a family of three boys registering. We encourage any parents who have boys to come out and help out on the nights you are available and possibly someone who works an opposite shift can be there when you're not.
