SCUGOG Patti Goreski is Big Brothers Association executive It's a "big" job, but there is "little" doubt that Patti Goreski can handle it. Mrs. Goreski has been hired as the executive director- secretary of the Big Brothers/ Big Sisters Association of North Durham. She took over the position on July 15. Elgin Knopp, president of the association says "the job takes a lot of organizational skills" and Mrs. Goreski is the perfect indi- vidual for the job. A field worker in Oshawa for the Ministry of Community and Social Services for five years, Mrs. Goreski has the social background necessary for the job. She also serves as Brown Owl for the Scugog Island Brownies. One of her main duties as ex- ecutive director-secretary for the association is recruiting and matching big and little brothers and sisters. At present, the association is in need of three big brothers in Brock, three big brothers in Ux- PATTI GORESKI bridge, two big sisters in Ux- bridge and lots of littles in both Uxbridge and Scugog town- ships, Mrs. Goreski says. A "big" must be at least 18 years old and have three to four hours to share with a little brother or sister each week. Ministry desperate From Page 2 on August 28, a four-man com- mittee was appointed by the re- gion to begin the negotiation process for funding for this site. Regional representatives are not too optimistic about the talks, however. Yvonne Chris- tie, Scugog's regional council- lor, says the feeling in council was that the minister was be- ing "unrealistic" concerning her requests. She also says that there must concessions made by the minister if this pro- cessistoget started. According to the minister, the site must be up and running by next year, but councillor Christie doesn't believe this will be possible. She points to the studies that will take months to complete before con- struction begins. This will then push the timetable into the winter months. The $10 million figure cur- rently circulating is on the low side, councillor Christie adds. - She saysit is more in the neigh- borhood of $12 million, with $1 million off the top for consult- ing fees alone. . - Mayor Howard Hall is not surprised by the minister's re- quest for the temporary trans- fer station. He says the minis- ter is "desperate" to do something to fill in time until a permanent site is built in 1996. But he adds that it is "a lot of money to spend on a temporary measure." Mayor Hall questions the idea of building the site- at Brock West on land owned by Metropolitan Toronto. He be- lieves it would be much more logical to build it on region- owned land. director - A "little" doesn't have to be a child who has lost a parent due to death, desertion or divorce, but can be any child between the ages of 6-17 who may need an extra companion in their life. As well as recruiting and matching, Mrs. Goreski will man the North Street office. "It's a one-person office," Mrs. Goreski says. "When someone calls they'll be dealing directly with me." Mrs. Goreski symbolizes "a constant" in the organization. While the board of directors may fluctuate, she will remain a captain of the team. Mrs. Goreski works with the board of directors to plan spe- cial events for the association. September is an extremely busy month for the association. Big Brothers/Big Sisters volun- teers had a face painting booth at the Port Perry Fair during Kids Day on Saturday. Other events for the month include Kite Day (Sept. 7), a car rally (Sept. 14), and the second annual Monte Carlo and Art Auction (Sept. 20). See separ- ate story for details on these events. "It certainly has been hectic, but I've received a lot of sup from the board of directors," Mrs. Goreski says.
