re -------- 2S POT "A Family Tradition for 125 Years' Big fun planned for Big Brothers' Monte Carlo night The Big Brothers/Big Sisters Association of North Durham has big plans for the month of September. Three of the association's special events take place this month, and the great news is you don't have to be a "big" or a "little" to participate. The first event is the annual Kite Day to be held this Satur- day Sep 7) at the Port Perry High School track. Kids of all ages are invited to make and fly their own kites. All the materials will be provid- ed by the association. The fun starts at 1 p.m. and admissions free. The annual car rally will be held on Saturday, Sept. 14. Starting time is 8 a.m. at Elgin Park in Uxbridge. This event is also open to the general public. The rally has been designed with the youngsters in mind. Navigational duties should be undertaken by a youth under the age of 16. The final event for Septem- ber is the Second Annual Monte Carlo and Art Auction on Fri- day, Sept. 20. The event starts at 6:30 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. The Monte Carlo will follow at 8:30 p.m. and an auction, consisting of high quality items will begin at10 p.m. Guest auctioneer will be Henry Kahn. Some of the items on the block include a signed and numbered print called Ca- nadian Jay from Marc Barrie's Deep Woods Collection. Homage to the Native Peo- ple, a bronzed sculpture by Au- gustin Filiporic, will also be up for grabs. Quilts, fibre art, duck carv- ings and other fine pieces of work have also been donated to the auction. The pieces, ranging in value from $100 to $6,000, will be on display at the Scugog Memorial Public Library from Sept. 6-11 and Sept.17-20. Tickets for the Monte Carlo and Art Auction event are $25 and can be purchased by calling 985-3733. Scottish Tattoo proceeds without council's backing Although his request for funds from Scugog Council was rejected, Bill Barr says his plans for a Scottish Tatoo festi- val will go as planned. Mr. Barr made a formal re- quest to council recently, ask- ing for help in funding a festival planned for Sept. 15 in Port Perry. This request was turned down, however. Council ex- plained that it did not have the cash available. Despite this set back, Mr. Barr says the day will go ahead as planned. The bands are: Pipes and Drums of Lindsay, Scott McCormack, Bowman- ville Legion Pipe Band, Ajax Legion Pipe Band, and Sir San- ford Fleming Pipe and Drum Band of Peterborough. High- land dancers will also be fea- tured. The bands will march from Port Perry High School, along Queen Street to the bandshell. They will then perform in the park. Mr. Barr estimates the cost of the day, which includes pay- ment for the bands, and the "rental of the sound system to be approximately $3,200. He hopes some of the cost of the day is absorbed through dona- tions from the public. The public is invited to the festivities which will get under- way at 2 p.m. It is suggested that a lawn chair or blanket is brought, as the show will be more than two hoursinlength.
