TTT TORRE hey "A Family Tradition for 125 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 10, 1991 - 13 Hangin' out. That's what the cows In this piece are doing. Artist Laura (lalll) Blodgett uses wood, paint and an inverted apple tray to create this three-dimensional piece. Please see story. Whimsical folk art on display at library By Julia Dempsey When Laura Blodgett was 18, the last thing she wanted to be was a child. She even gave up her child- hood nickname, lalli, for her more adult-sounding Christian name Laura. But more than a year ago, Ms. Blodgett gave up a success- ful career in banking to become a child again. She said giving up her posi- tion as vice-president of a finan- cial institution was a hard deci- sion, but one that she hasn't regretted. "Since I've started painting, I'mback to being a child again," she told the Star during the opening of her art exhibit at the Scugog Memorial Public Li- brary. Ms. Blodgett started dab- bling in her medium -- three- dimensional whimsical folk art -- in 1989 when she made two creations for Christmas presents. She enjoyed it so much she decided to make a ca- reer out of it. "I went from there and here I am," she said, looking around the room at her one-person ex- hibit. Ms. Blodgett uses wood, bright-colored paints and chi- net bowls to create her "corny", yet unique three-dimensional folk art. And all of her work is signed "lalli", not Laura Blod- gett. Everyday phrases become ti- tles for her work. One piece called "the more, the merrier" shows a mother hen surrounded by eggs that are about to hatch. "Double trouble" is a picture oftwinsin a carriage. This reporter's personal fa- vorite is of a cat peering into an aquarium filled with fish. The piece is appropriately titled "window shopping." As luck would have it the piece was already sold when I arrived at the library at 1:50 p.m. (20 minutes after the ex- hibit opened). In fact, Ms. Blodgett had al- ready sold five of the 16 pieces in her exhibit. Another three pieces were sold before the I left at2:15p.m. "The biggest pleasure I get is seeing other people enjoying my work," she said. "IT always hang my work up in my own home first. I say 'I made you. I enjoyed you. Now it's time for someone else to en- joy you." Ms. Blodgett's exhibit at the Scugog Memorial Public Li- brary continues until Sept. 27. 1 OPEN HOUSE 1 records.
