On the plus side, it is a bumper crop for orchards, part- ly due to a hot summer and lit- tle rain. In fact, apples, as well as most other crops, are ready for harvest two weeks ahead of schedule. However, some growers were devastated by the hail that swept through the area in mid- August. Don Hoekstra, who owns an apple orchard in Honey's Cor- ners, says his apples were to- tally destroyed by a 20-minute hail and windstorm. He has about 1,500 trees, and several different varieties including MacIntosh, Spartan, Red Delicious, Golden Deli- cious, Idared and Northern Spy, but most have holes and dents in them from the hail- stones. Last year he had a thriving U-Pick operation, but this year "they're all going for juice," he says. "We had put a lot of work into it this summer and we had a beautiful crop," he says. "It's a shame, but there's nothing we can do about it." Carol and Larry Fagel, who own Windy Ridge Apple Or- chard on Scugog Island, were also hit b; fare as badly. They had hail twice, which hurt many of their apples, and also heavy rain in the spring resulted in scabs on many va- rieties. If the hail had hit the apples when they were smaller, the marks would have healed into a bulge or dimple, explains Mrs. Fagel. But when they're almost fully wn, the hail nicks turn to bruises and the apples spoil. to se for juice. It's a real loss," she says. ready ripe for picking.
