The Macln- tosh and Cortland apples are starting to be picked now. She advises apple buyers to make sure the apples aren't soft or bruised. If you don't mind how they look, seconds are cheaper, she says, but apples are always a good buy. At the height of the apple season, Port Perry will be hold- ing its own apple festival. The fourth annual festival will be Sept. 28, says Mary Fines, a member of the Busi- ness Improvement Area (BIA). Queen Street will be closed to traffic, she says, and there will be vendors on the street. Highlights will include Scugog Shores Museum's apple cider press, a decorated store front contest, and booths set up by several community groups and organizations, featuring apple- related arts and crafts.
