Minister of Transportation coming to Port Perry By Gillian Barfoot The Interim Waste Authori- ty's (IWA) open house held in Port Perry on Monday generat- ed mixed reactions from Scu- gog residents. Joyce Kelly, of Blackstock, was one of 50 people who at- tended the open house at the Oddfellows Hall within the first three hours. She found the information presented con- cerning the site selection crite- ria easy to understand. "They're giving us an oppor- tunity to be part of it," she said. "It's also helpful that they're telling us what they're going to avoid." "We may not like what they do, but I guess it depends on whether it tramps on your own toes." She believes Scugog resi- dents are concerned about the prospect of a landfill site, and will become involved in the se- lection process. "We're that kind of people. We like to see what's happen- ing." Another local resident, who didn't want to be identified, said she didn't put much faith in the site selection process. "I don't think they're really concerned about the environ- ment at all," she said. "When it comes down to it, they're going to put it [the landfill site] where they want to." She said the list of criteria sounds good, but "I don't neces- sarily believe everything that they say. But I'll listen." John Steele, communication co-ordinator with the IWA, 7A Hwy. problems to be viewed The provincial transporta- tion minister is planning a trip to Port Perry shortly to get a firsthand look at the township's traffic concerns. Mayor Howard Hall told council on Monday that Gilles Pouliot is planning the trip to become better acquainted with the area and the traffic con- cerns. This special trip is in re- sponse to a letter which the mayor sent to the previous transportation minister Ed Philip on February 29 of this year. In that letter Mayor Hall out- lined the township's concerns over the traffic situation on Highway 7A, particularly along the Causeway. For a number of years the traffic flow along the Causeway SCUGOG'S COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER OF CHOICE has been a contentious issue with council. During the sum- mer months fishermen use the banks on either side of High- way 7A for fishing and often pose traffic hazards as they dart back and forth across the road. A three-car accident on the Canada Day weekend on the Causeway was caused by a fisherman crossing the road. Council is also frustrated by the mess which the fishermen, mostly non-residents of the township, leave behind. Gar- bage is often strewn about the grounds, presenting an untidy appearance. Council is considering a num- ber of options to alleviate the problem along the Causeway. One of the suggestions was to construct a parking lot on a va- Turn to Page 11 A FAMILY TRADITION FOR 125 YEARS | Many attend said he has been to several open houses in all three re- gions. In Metro Toronto, only two or three people turned up to some of the meetings. In con- trast, the open house in Ux- bridge last Tuesday was at- tended by more than 30 residents and he expects even more in Port Perry. He explained that the open house is to allow the IWA to ex- plain how it will go about look- ing for a landfill site, and what criteria it may use to select that site.
