Future shining stars On Aug. 12, both Luke Car- naghan and Daniel Lee of Port Perry Minor Hockey travelled to Whitby's Iroquois Park where they attended Ian Young's Goaltending School for the week. This was a great experience for the boys who have aspira- tions of being N.H.L. goalies some day. The cousins worked hard all week long on their skills and the new ones taught to them by their instructors. The teachers at the goalie camp were Peter Sidorkiewicz of the Hartford Whalers, Kirk Mclean of the Vancouver Ca- nucks, Jeff Hackett of the San Jose Sharks and Ian Young goalie coach for the Oshawa Generals and the Toronto Ma- ple Leafs. Rev. Art and Ruth Rodgers of West Hill were visiting in the com- munity on Tuesday. Visitors of the Armour McMillans were Mr. and Mrs. Bert Vandyke of Uptergrove. Also the Don Fergusons of Bobcaygeon visited the McMillans recently. Our local Arthritis Campaign chairman is still looking for volunteer canvassers. The fall meeting of Greenbank Women's Institute is on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 7:30 p.m. in Greenbank Hall. We invite every lady and teenagers too, to hear "Constable Jerry Smith" of the Whitby Police Force. His presentation is for all new drivers and women who are driving alone and also how to pro- tect yourself, when your car breaks down. This will be at the beginning of our meeting, so if the young people care to leave after his talk they can. Refreshments will be served. Come and bring a friend and your mother too! We hope to reach all our young peo- ple with this very special meeting. A good time was had by all at the hall on Friday evening, when the monthly euchre party was held. Ladies first prize went to Betty Barnett; 2nd Edna Meyers and 3rd Marlene Blaine. Men's first - George Harper; 2nd Andy Munro and 3rd Les Meyers. Lucky door prizes went to Muriel Gibson, Verna Draper and Les Meyers. Our next euchre is to be on October 4. Once again Muriel Gibson won the Reserve Champion for her beautiful quilt and a second rib- bon on her other quilt. I got my share of ribbons for my hand work but I am most proud of the Retieneas that took first prize at both fairs. We are happy to report the win- ner of the silent auction at the Women's Institute Display at Port Perry Fair was '"'Mrs. Sherry Ellis" who lives north of Manilla. The last meeting of the Durham East 4-H Sheep Club was held on Tues., Aug. 13 at the farm of Wesley and Lesley Glaspell. The 20 enthusiastic members, as well as some parents, broke in- to two groups. One group learned the proper procedure of trimming and blocking a lamb for achieve- ment day. The other group discussed different breeds of sheep and examined the different fleeces of wool. The happy couple are now honeymooning in Europe for three weeks. The Greenbank Gamblers spent a week in Camrose Alberta recently, representing Ontario in the Canadian Men's Senior Fastball Championships. They were accompanied by many of their loyal fans. They played five games - against Quebec, Saskat- chewan, Nova Scotia, Manitoba and Alberta. Although they didn't win they gained much valuable experience and the Western hospitality was outstanding. On Friday evening P.C. Jim Hunter received his 20 year pin from the Oshawa Police Force. This was at the dinner and presentation ceremony. His pro- ud parents are Jean and Neil Hunter in Greenbank. They then attended the 65th birthday party for Mr. Jerry Hunter at the Port Perry Curling Club. Sheep Club well done. Reserve Champion Showman was Dianne Bowman. Senior Champion Showman was Gena Jasper-Fayer with Mark Bragg being named Reserve Champion Showman. Gena and Mark were then chosen as Grand Champion and Reserve Cham- pion Showman, and will compete at Orono Fair for Champion Livestock Showman. Champion Lamb for the day was shown by Mark Bragg, with Jeff Kemp showing Reserve Champion Lamb.
