As the MPP for this riding, I also took considerable flack from 'some of my constituents over the dropping of the $100. In 1959, the $100 went a long way, it doesn't go far today. The Ministry of Education is now revising the program in order to recognize the outstanding academic achievement 'of all students. This includes those who are continuing their education in university, college, or an appren- ticeship program, and those who are entering the work force. In 1989-90, there were more than 18,600 Ontario Scholars, and at least that number are expected to qualify this year. In a time of economic restraints I believe that the government has a respon- sibility to encourage achievement among all our students. To do this, I believe that we must put as much money as possi- ble into educational programs and services. I am very proud of our Ontario Scholars. These students will continue to receive an Ontario Scholar certificate and a congratulatory letter signed by the Minister, the Honorable Marion Boyd, to personally mark their achievement. To all those who wrote to me or took the trouble to telephone me, I appreciated your views. I also hope that you can agree that we owe all of our students the best education we can provide them with in order that they are better able to compete in the work place of the 90s - the way I see it. I know for a fact that ex- citing things are being planned. U.C.W. will meet on Wednesday at 8 p.m. Everyone is welcome. School is back. It was so good to be out on yard duty to see all those smiling faces. Some students have grown 15cm over the sum- mer. They don't seem to be the lit- tle kids I remembered. I hope the moms enjoyed the peace and quiet during the day. I also hope they were pleased to see the bud- ding young scientists return home.
