8 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 17, 1991 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Letters io the editor Opposes user pay garbage From Page 7 at the local dumps. Can you im- agine the mess we will be in when and if we start charging user fees The Port Perry Star A Family Tradition in Port Perry and area for for ordinary garbage pick-up? I feel that the Association of Municipalities of Ontario voted ir- responsibly when they voted to ask the Environment Minister Ruth Grier to even consider such a resolution. I certainly support the Chair- man of Durham Region Works Committee who is adamantly op- posed to a user pay scheme for garbage. I also think that as a councillor for Ward 7 in Oshawa he should extend his beliefs and have the separate charge which is levied against Ward 7 ratepayers for garbage pick-up removed from their tax bill. I would like to take this oppor- tunity to urge each and every council to pass a resolution in op- position to the resolution passed by the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (re: user pay garbage pick-up) and to forward the resolution on to the Environment Minister Ruth Grier. Sincerely, Barrie Clulow Although | can understand people wanting peace and quiet in their homes, | somehow can- not completely sympathize with the residents of Heath Cresent. It seems to me that these residents are not be- ing at all reasonable when it comes to complaints of noise at Mother Jackson's. If Perry Glen Estates had been developed prior to Mother Jackson's then | would sympathize with their plight but the fact remains Mother Jackson's was in the same location years ago and is not only a company. that employs many local people, but is a company very active in the community. If | were to step out today and buy a house one of the first things a potential home buyer should be doing Is checking out the neighborhood in which they will be living, the surrounding area is just as important as the house one chooses to live in. When these residents moved into Heath Cre- sent, Mother Jackson's was already in full opera- tion and if there is noise from the factory it has been there all along, and the buyer should have checked into this before purchasing in that area. The "alleged" noise was there before the sub- divsion was built and before those residents took out their mortgage, and | do not believe Mother Jackson's should be held responsible for a buyer who didn't check out all the pros and cons of liv- ing there. It all comes down to buyer beware. Whether it is noise from a factory, the smell of a barnyard, if it was there before you | do not see these people having the right to try and change it. The noise of a factory is no different from the neighbor who has a barking dog at 5 a.m. or the neighbors who send their children to squeal on your property in the mornings. There is not too much you can do about it but live with it, or chose to live without it and move. Maybe the fact that these are the only people who know what it is like to live near a factory in Scugog makes a difference but | don't fall for that either. | think we should just be happy that there is a firm such as Mother Jackson's who is so commu- nity oriented, and that because of it Scugog Township is a more thriving community, and many of our neighbors are employed by them. Lest we forget Johnson Controls leaving Port Perry and the vast number of people left jobless. Back Talk by Kelly Low We should be thankful to a firm such as Mother Jackson's, not condeming them for the job they do. ARARSARAARAN Haven't wrote a column in a few weeks or done anything else for that matter. For the past three weeks | have been battling a virus and to say the least it takes every last ounce of energy out of a person. As a person who has never had a virus, or the flu | didn't know what a sick person was to do. Heck | hadn't had the flu since | was in diapers and wasn't sure how to act. So | decided | wasn't going to allow a virus to ruin my life so what did | do but play baseball, went out and golfed 18 holes, took a few walks and bike rides, and | guess my body didn't like that and | was stuck in bed for almost two weeks. As a person who normally watches little telev- sion and is constantly on the go, | went a little stir crazy. Upon returning to work | kept fellow co- workers in tune with every current event in the world since | caught the news three to four times a day. | have seen every game show ever invent- ed, and am sick of Alex Trebek, and the phrase "Remember to have your pet spayed or neutered" sends me into a tailspin. | watched all the old sit- coms | hadn't seen in years such as One Day At A Time, WKRP, Happy Days and Gilligan's lIs- land. One thing | did enjoy was | caught up with sev- eral years with the Bundys. Married...With Chil- dren is actually on television twice a day every day through the week, and then again on Sunday nights. There is nothing like six days a week of off-the-cuff insults, dumb blondes, sleazeballs, and bathroom jokes to keep a person entertained. On my return to work | found | had a renewed interest in my work, or maybe just a renewed in- terest in being able to actually go to work. it's a slow process getting over a virus. I've de- cided that the next person | know that gets one will be the person | feel real sorry for. There is nothing more boring than re-runs on television, missing out on everything outside, looking like a twig after not eating for 10 days and even missing work. Well at least | came to one conclusion "A housewife | could never be," this may be one of the few times I've ever said it but | am happy as can be to be at work even if it is a Monday and production is lagging along. For Better or For Worse® SOMETIMES HELPS. by Lynn Johnston DAD SAYS ALONG WALK ) [.( Here. LL BE BACK Think twice before voting From Page 7 ed the reader services which Canada Employment"s own policies said I was entitled to have. When Mr. Bouchard failed to reply, Mr. Lawrence wrote to him again; he wrote four letters over about a nine month period and finally the Minister wrote back to him on 19th October, 1987, assuring him that I was being pro- vided with assistance and that I had even been sent on job interviews. As I was still being refused reader service, despite the Minister's assurances to Mr. Lawrence, I stepped up my cam- paign for proper treatment of disabled job seekers and even- tually brought an action against Canada Employment before the Canadian Human Rights Com- anssion, which is still in progress. In addition, I wrote to the newly named Employment Minister, Barbara McDougall, asking her what interviews I had been sent on since, as noted above, I had in fact not been sent anywhere. Ms. McDougall did not answer any of my letters so I wrote to Prime Minister Mulroney - one letter which I sent to the Prime Minister was registered on 5th July, 1989, and was directed to the personal attention of his Chief of Staff, Mr. Stanley Hartt. I have never received a reply from Mr. Mulroney, although in a letter dated 1st February, 1991, a Canada Employment official named Michel Sequin, responding to an application I made under Access to Information pro- cedures, admitted that there was no record of my ever having been sent on job interviews. He did not explain why the former Minister, Mr. Bouchard, had chosen to mislead M.P., Allan Lawrence about this. I still believe that there are many fine and honest people in the Conservative Party, Allan Lawrence and Sam Cureatz being among the best, but for some reason which I can't understand, the leadership is totally out of touch with ordinary people's con- cerns and when serious problems - such as those documented above - are brought to the attention of Ministers and even of the Prime Minister, no action is taken to deal with them. I can't blame peo- ple for being angry and frustrated with the government when it acts this way and if there is no change in its attitude before the next elec- tion, I, for one, will have to vote for another party.
