This unmanned station will be a remote gauge used to moni- tor water and precipitation lev- elson the river. In 1990, a study entitled "Flood Forecasting Network Analysis" recommended that automatic gauging stations be established on the Pigeon River and Cawkers Creek in 1992. But a staff review conducted earlier this year determined there was a need for a station on the Nonquon River instead. The Authority decided to aban- don the Cawkers Creek project, in favor of the Nonquon. "This change is suggested in the belief that information ob- tained from the Nonquon River site would more reasonably re- flect regional conditions," an Authority report said. When the Authority conduct- ed a 1981 flood prone study, no damage centres were identified along the Nonquon River. But the Authority now recognizes the potential for flooding exists, and as development through- out the area intensifies, it wants to be prepared and able to provide adequate flood fore- casting. Mr. Schuyler says at the present there is not much infor- mation on precipitation levels and stream flow within Scugog, but says this would change with the introduction of such a system. The total cost of the system is estimated at $15,750 and is in- cluded in the Authority's 1992 budget.
