David Shepherd, Minister SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 22 Seagrave Anniversary Service 11 a.m. Guest Speaker: Mr. Ted Farrow Soloist: Marilyn Porter The St. John's Presbyterian Church is celebrating its 1 bo i$ 35th anniversary. The present church was built in 1870 and this picture was taken before the turn of the century. Some- time during the second decade of the 1900s, the beautiful steeple was removed when the timbers supporting it became too loose. 135th anniversary for church Starting this weekend, ap- proximately 75 members and numerous non-member sup- porters of the St. John's Presby- terian Church will begin look- ing back in remembrance and retrospect at the 135-year his- tory of the church. In 1854, Reverend Robert Monteath, a young minister serving a United Presbyterian Church in Greenlaw, Scotland, answered a call for missionar- ies to serve the needs of a young country called Canada. He spent two years travelling Upper and Lower Canada orga- nizing congregations in the newer districts. In the course of his work, Rev. Monteath reached Prince Albert where a few scattered Presbyterians lived. These he - formed into a congregation in the fall of 1855. The following spring, the 24 members and 15 adherents formally petitioned the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland to be admit- ted as a congregation, with Rev. Robert Monteath as Minister. The prayer of their petition was granted and so was laid the foundation of what is now St. John's Presbyterian Church, Port Perry. The first congregation wor- shipped in the building of the Methodists at Prince Albert. During those early years, Rev. Monteath superintended the Sunday School, taught the Bible class and preached in the afternoon. No choir or organ ex- isted during his eight-year min- istryinthe area. Working beside Rev. Mon- teath during the formation years was his good friend T. C. Forman, who led the service of praise. Mr. Forman also served as Treasurer of the Church for more than 40 years. He was one of the first elders and was the first Clerk of Session. It has been written that with- out the faithful and diligent de- votion of Mr. Forman, there may have been no history of St. John's Presbyterian Church. In 1870, the congregation at Prince Albert organized the so- ciety at Port Perry and erected the present church on Queen Street. It was then known as Burn's Presbyterian Church. (The name was changed to St. John's at an unknown date.) An article in "Commemorating 100 Years in Ontario County" esti- mated the church cost $1,000 to build. Over the years, several min- isters have brought forth the message of God, and the church structure has seen many changes through remodelling projects. Even though the messengers have changed, as has the place of worship, one thing has re- mained constant -- a strong, lo- cal following in the Presbyteri- an faith.
