& | A re sr "A Family Tradition for 125 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, October 1, 1991 - 9 C3 SANS aL ~ Tn Letters io the editor Writer says 'Reform' and COR parties are only light To the Editor: As we face more endless de- bate on the Constitution, let's not forget that the whole mat- ter was settled in 1971 at the Victoria Conference, after which Premier Bourassa re- turned to Quebec and scuttled the accord after pressure from the separatist St. Jean Baptiste Society. In 1982, when the Queen signed the new constitution, Quebec refused to sign -- yet four of the five signators were French-Canadians. The ink was barely dry when more de- mands came from Quebec and the defeated Meech Lake fias- co. Although not a signator, Quebec used the "not with- standing" clause to introduce Bill 178 (French-only sign law) contrary to the ruling of the Su- preme Court of Canada that it was unconstitutional. How could Quebec legally use a clause that it was not a signator too? The Mulroney government spent $27 million on Spicer Commission to find out what everyone knew -- that most peo- ple do not want official bilin- gualism and multiculturalism. The cost in billions does more to divide the country than to unite it. We now face another five months of a Joe Clark circus crossing the country. In Canada's only officially bi- lingual province, New Bruns- wick, the COR Party, in less than two years, won twice as many seats as the PCs and the NDP combined -- with more than 20 per cent of the total votes. The latest poll found that more than half of Quebecers now want to separate. They want their cake and eat it tooby using sovereignty-association. They want protection with the Canadian Army and the use of Canadian dollar etc. along with trade protection. They already have 48 per cent of all the dairy business in Canada. The rest of Canada has spent billions on bi- lingualism to placate Quebec. In Durham Region we spend $32 million a year for Immer- sion, not including core French. All we hear from Quebec is de- mands, demands, demands. Mulroney promised us jobs, jobs, jobs. We have millions out of work with half of the jobs in Ontario gone forever as plants close permanently. Our energy should be directed to saving the economy, not a divisive consti- tution. Britain has no constitution! Yet it has unlimited freedoms. They say they don't need one. The Soviet Union has a sweet sounding one that means little to the average Soviet citizen. How can we have equality for all Canadians when one prov- ince demands special status: ie. Distinct Society? Are the abo- riginals and the rest of Canadi- ans less than equal, in fact sec- ond class? The only light on the horizon is the Reform Party (and COR) that advocate Quebec remain French-speaking and the rest of Canada to remain English- speaking. Many people feel that the final solution will only come when Quebec goes its own way allowing the rest of the country to get on with our eco- nomic future. In a CTV poll (March 3/91) about 70 per cent of Canadians said let Quebec go. After 125 ears of wrangling, it might be st for all concerned. Sincerely, Dean. Kelly President Association of Dedicated Canadians Port Perry P.S. The Durham Board of Edu- cation is facing more and more demands from government- funded French groups for even more power in our schools.
