YR ------ PR eT rs prem == 2- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, October 1, 1991 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Police warn residents to beware of bogus fundraising schemes A mumber of Port Perry resi- dents have received phone calls soliciting money for the fire de- partment, but the Scugog Fire Department knows nothing about the campaign. A Port Perry woman who wished to remain annonymous told the Port Perry Star last week that she received a phone call from a female caller asking for funds for the "Port Perry Fire Department." Although the phone solicitor gave her name at the beginning of the call, the woman could not re- member it. The phone solicitor told the lady that she was collecting money for the "fire depart- ment." When asked by the woman if she meant the Port Perry Fire Department, she was told it was correct. The solicitor did not state what the money was tobe used for. The woman told the caller "that she would have to think about it" and hung up. The woman said she was sus- picious of the call because she could not remember reading anything in the paper regard- ing any type of fundraising ac- tivity. She said she called the Star to confirm her suspicions. Charlie Lown, deputy fire chief Hall 1, said he knows nothing about the telephone calls and confirmed that they are not conducting any type of fundraising campaign. Bill Harrison, a captain at Hall #1, also said that "nothing is going on at this time." He said he has received a number of calls from other peo- ple to verify this phone cam- paign. And last Wednesday Capt. Harrison got a call as well. In the case of Capt. Harri- son's call it was from the Fire- man's Association to give mon- ey to the hospital for crippled children. Capt. Harrison said this is the second time this type of scheme has been tried. Last year he said a number of people also received calls soliciting funds for the fire department. Gary Cooper, chief, Oshawa Fire Department told the Star that no departments in the Oshawa area are out canvass- ing at this time either. Sergeant Dean Campbell, from Durham Regional Police 26 division, told the Port Perry Star last week that he had not heard of any complaints re- garding the matter. Sgt. Campbell said citizens should be very careful when asked to give money over the telephone, and in fact should never offer money to a caller. The Bridal Touch FOR ALL YOUR BRIDAL NEEDS 209 Mary Street, Port Perry (located in the Personal Touch building) 985-8208 Nellie Stell He said a person should only give money to a recognized charity worker who presents proper identification in person. Sgt. Campbell said if a per- son receives a call which they feel is suspicious they should get as much information as pos- sible, and then call the police immediately.
