They had left John Sharp in charge of the post while they ventured up the Scugog River. When they returned, they found Sharp murdered, his skull smashed by a club. They rushed back along the Scugog Route and reported their findings to Eleazar Lock- wood, the constable, who lived on the Lake Ontario shore in the Harmony Creek area. Lock- wood claimed that two days earlier he had seen an Indian, Ogotonogcut demonstrate in a drunken state to another Indi- an how he had killed Sharp. The two Indians had then moved on to York {Toronto}. Lockwood found them en- camped on Toronto Island. He reported the details to Colonel Congratulations Givins, the area Indian Super- intendent who promptly arrest- ed Ogotonogcut. The accused man was giv- en counsel who raised, correct- ly, the point that the alleged crime did not take place in the Home district (York) but east of it. So that the trial should take place at Newcastle {Presuile} =» A small gun-boat, the Speedy, was acquired to take the trial's personnel to Newcas- tle. On board were the Solicitor General, Robert Gray, Judge Cochrane, The Sheriff of York A. Macdonell as well as the prisoner, constables and wit- nesses. As the vessel made its way to Presquile Harbour on that fateful October day, a gale sprang up sinking the Speedy drowning all on board. The tragic and somewhat inconclusive end to the incident of the Speedy has one minor consolation: it provides us with the first recorded names of indi- vidual Indians living in the Lake Scugog area. Purdy's Dam The Wilmot Survey of - 1809-10 shows a totally differ- "Cmiel"s Place Restaurant and Dining Lounge ent lake from today. The lake which Wilmot surveyed was only half the size of today's lake. In 1829, William Purdy erected a dam at Lindsay, rais- je the level of Lake Scugog ten eet. The flooding in the Scugog basin caused by the Purdy dam covered thousarids of acres. Some of the flooded land had been cleared by farmers in Reach and Victoria. The farm- ers organized a revolt. Armed with axes, pitchforks and fire- arms they attacked the dam, destroying much of it. Purdy, realizing the value of a dam and a water powered mill at what is now Lindsay, pe- titioned Lieutenant Governor OLX -- ARMS TRD Scugog Island in 1853. The scene shows the waterfront s Eye Park are located today. Sir Francis Bond Head and en- tered into a legal contract with the government for a mill pow- ered by the water from the dam. Purdy was supported by the lumberman of Victoria County and Scugog Village {Port Perry} who realized the value of improved navigation' on Lake Scugog. A new dam was built rais- ing the lake level, this time by only eight feet and soit remains today. Rotted tree stumps from the flooding are still to be seen in the Lake Scugog area. They are most noticeable on the Non- quon River at Robinglade not far from the trading post noted by Major Wilmot in 1809. For an elegant evening of dining pleasure, visit the Rembrant Room.
