125th ANNIVERSARY COMMEMORATIVE ISSUE PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, October 1, 1991 - 39 School 1930 - 1931 on the front lawn Port Perry recorded on film by the Leonards Many of the photographs of Port Perry's citizens found in this special edition of the Port Perry Star were taken by the Le- onards. James Leonard opened his "Photography Gallery" in the 1860s north west corner of Queen and Perry Streets. He died on January 8, 1884 at the age of 55 but his business was carried on by his son W.H. Leonard. Mr. W.H. Leonard operated his gallery on the second floor of the building but all was lost in the disastrous fire of 1884. Un- daunted, he rebuilt his house and business. His customers en- tered the gallery from Perry Street & climbed the stairs to his second floor gallery on the street side. He lived behind, on the west side. W.H. Leonard contin- ued to record the faces of Port Perry's citizens until low priced cameras hit the market in the 1920s. The legacy of the Leo- nards enables us to see the peo- ple of our past.
